This classic sweet stout is made with 6% Oats. This gives the stout a velvety smoothness. Its finish is predominantly roasted with a hint of chocolate malt. The overall sensation is a lighter tasting, velvety smoothness. Enjoy!

Had on-tap at Dragonmead.

Appearance: Well, what is there to say? Thick, creamy-as-hell tan head that stays on top of the beer. Thick wall of lacing. One of the best beers I've had, visually. Dat nitro-tap!

Smell: Hm. Yeah, that's nice. Light, but pleasant. Coffee and toffee/caramel sort of aromas are there though. What's there is really good.

Taste/feel: Taste is much like the smell. Coffee, toffee/caramel. Basic. Light. Easy drinking. The obvious comparison is Founders' Oatmeal Stout. That's a better beer, but not by too much. Simply put, that beer just has a bit more flavor. The look and feel of this one though are excellent.

A well-made Oatmeal Stout. I'd like some more flavor, but what IS in here is tasty. I'd have it again for sure.

Had at the Dragonmead brewery in Warren as a part of a five-brew flight. Pours a very black color, completely opaque with a fuzzy, dark-khaki colored head that retains fairly well. Aroma consists of a heavy load of roasted malts with maybe a touch of smoked malt, too; oats and grains abound, along with a hint of woodiness and a slight mocha-java vibe. The taste was even better than expected - a good dose of roasted malts lead the way into a burnt and slightly smokey profile. Dark coffee beans and hints of bitter chocolate jump out, but one flavor rains supreme - the OATS! This is, without a doubt, an "oatmeal" stout. The oat flavor is heavy, heavy, heavy, and it's certainly a good thing. Dry, rustic oats coat the palate, also giving plenty of almost wheaty, grainy flavor. Very creamy on the mouth (which I'm guessing is also from the amount of oats used). I don't taste too many hops in this one, although a touch of bitterness is certain there. Carbonation was nice, mellow enough to not distract, but it really brought the flavors out.

This was a tasty oatmeal stout, and probably the best beer I've had from Dragonmead, although they don't really give it very much competition for the top spot. It's a shame that the only place you can get this is the brewery... I'd rather see this bottled over Crown Jewels or Erik the Red.

Reviewed on 6/19/2010. On nitro tap at the brewery. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of smoky malt, roasted malt, and burnt notes. Flavor of solid, robust roasted malt and some smoky undertones. Pretty tasty and one of the better Dragonmead beers of the night.

By far my favorite of the (admittedly small number of) beers I tasted during my visit to Michigan. Dark black in color, completely opaque. Cappucino colored head, and scents of roasted coffee, cocoa, and toffee. Taste was slightly bitter, with the coffee and cocoa coming out full force. Mouthfeel was thick and rich, smooth and creamy. Drinkability was good, though the ABV was certainly noticable before long. A perfectly competant example of the style.

Dead black with a great mocha head that leaves sticky lace all the way down the glass. Nice!

Chocolate, oaty, coffee goodness. Somewhat subdued toffee and a smidgeon of vanilla. Dark fruits as well.

Chocolate is much dark and more bitter than the nose would indicate. Good amount of vanilla and caramel. A currant of both red and black varieties are present as well as black coffee and granola. Tannins are noticeable in the finish. Thick, creamy silk mouthfeel.
