This Berliner Weisse, a German sour wheat, is tart and sour with a grassy finish. Light in alcohol and body, this sour is crisp and refreshing. Add German Woodruff, a green melon herb flavor, or raspberry syrup to sweeten the sour. A traditional beer from Germany, classified as a Schankbier denoting a beer that is low in alcohol.

64oz growler poured into a berliner bowl. Thanks to BA Stormking for sharing the spoils of his Michican trade with me. The brew pours a pale golden color fairly clear and perhaps a bit darker for the style almost copper-like with a white fizzy cap that is quick to dissolve. Some spotty lace hangs to the glass.
The brew opens up, smelling lightly of plastic phenols. Some lemon and cider notes make their way across the nose as it warms up. After the brew is swirled as breaths a little, it loses that plastic off note and becomes more typical of the style with a clean lemony lactic note.
The taste unfortunately follows the initial lead of the aroma. It contains phenolics like plastic and an indication of pear/apple leaning more towards cider than anything else. A mild touch of wheat is noted and again more phenolics but this time seemingly more yeast driven than off and plastic-like. As the brew warms up, a greater focus on the lemony lacto tartness goes to center stage with an aftertaste of apple and pear skins.
This is a light bodied brew with a moderate to lighter level of carbonation for the style. I cant fault the feel though because for a growler, the carbonation is about as close as you are gonna get it for this style in this delivery format. Overall, its an ok offering. I didnt get any of the acedic components mentioned in the previous review. Perhaps this one is worth looking into again if the opportunity presents itself.

On-tap at Kuhnhenn. I think this was served in a pint glass.
A - White foam settles to a thick collar, partial cap, and no lace. Hazy, straw yellow body.
S - Wheat, light lemon, a bit tart, with increasing lactic character as it warms. Very classic, and thankfully devoid of the sulfur that plagues many first Berliner attempts.
T - The taste is surprisingly acidic relative to the aroma, but there's a not a lot of lactic or lemon flavor here; just wheat, grain and late-developing acidity. Somewhat simplistic, but I don't get the off-flavors other reviewers noted.
M - Medium body that is more than sufficient for the listed 3.25%. Pleasant carbonation, dry finish, with eventual stomach-provoking acidity.
D - It's a very classic and very acidic Berliner; more akin to the Bahnhof than other American takes on the style. Pretty refreshing summer beverage, although I'd like to see a bit more depth in subsequent batches; it was telling that the server was surprised I wanted my glass served 'naked'.
