Tasted at the BA Detroit gathering, 11/01/2003, at Kuhnhenn's.
Initial reaction: "It's fuckin' weird; but I like it."
There was consensus, at least, that it was indeed "fuckin' weird." I think though that the "liking it" part was a point of some contention.
They've got themselves a nifty little brew. Described as an "experimental molasses beer," it's served in a tulip glass with an initially large and pillow-like head. Fades quickly to more of a paté-colored ring around the top. Pretty dark, opaque body.
More mild aromas of smoked meats, bacon, and burnt sugar are briefly beat back by licorice and molasses. And then they return from whence they came upon the first sip. Medium-bodied brew brings the flavor of fatty meats slathered in their own grease, some mild spices around the edges. Not a damn thing hoppy about this beer -- fairly low bitterness. It just sort of naturally peters out to a somewhat clean finish.
What can I say? Smoked meats? Fat? Grease? And Molasses?
It's fuckin' weird; but I like it.

"Experimental Molasses beer. Dark, licorice/molasses flavor. Medium to high bitterness." -Kuhnhenn's Menu
Very strange.
The color is ebony with very little mousse.
The aromas are intense, earthy and sweet. Enjoy the licorice and molasses in the aromas because on the palate these elements are overtaken by dried meats, nitrited sausage, peanut butter and black soil. The bitterness is actually light to medium.
Odd, impressive.
