Metry's Winter LagerMetry's Winter Lager
Notes: The return of the Metry’s, it is a very light lager in color. It has a light, sweet grainy aroma with Noble hops present. This beer is well balanced and finishes clean. A light beer with a lot of alcohol, so be careful!!

Served on-tap at The Birdsall House in Peekskill.

Appearance is a light golden color with one finger of white had. Its` nose contains grains, spice and honey. This helles bock style has a taste with bread, wheat, sugar and some hops. Mouthfeel is medium with a crisp, sweet finish. A pretty good beer, but a little disappointed compared with some other beers from these guys. But worth trying if you come across it.

2011 Winter Solstice release

A - Pours light golden orange with half a finger of white head. Head has decent retention. Not much lacing to speak of.

S - Toasted grains, some white bread, a bit floral and a faint sweet bubblegum aroma.

T - Quite malty, with bread and toasted grain, and a mild tart citrus and faint hops on the finish.

M - Medium/light mouthfeel. Slight tart bitterness on the finish.

O - Pretty good overall. I am a fan of the style and this isn't in the upper echelon by any means, but an easy drinking lager with an interesting flavor profile.

Bottle from Masterski. 2011 Winter Solstice vintage. Snifter.

A: Yellow gold and slightly hazy with half an inch of pillowy foam that quickly disappears.

S: Sweet grain with expressive toasted and bread notes. Herbal hop notes are light, and I detect a little floral influence. 11% and I can't smell any alcohol. There's a little corn in there as well.

T: Biscuit blends with bread, corn, and grainy malt. There's a low bitterness and a restrained honey presence. I get a little lemongrass and wheat. Alcohol provides a little warming in the clean finish but not much flavor.

M: Lower medium in body with upper moderate carbonation.

Overall: A nice strong lager. Perfect for 7 AM on a Sunday morning. Perhaps I should go to church? That sounds incredibly boring and pointless but I could do anything at the moment. Spontaneity is the watchword! I think I'll go back to bed.

Bottle purchased at 2011 Winter Solstice. Served in a pilsener glass. The bottle says 11%(!), but I'm assuming that can't be correct as Kuhnhenn's current draft list says 7%.

A - Two fingers of off-white foam settle to a thin cap and a few stray splotches of lacing. Lightly hazed apricot body. Plenty of visible carbonation.

S - Lightly toasted grains dominate the aroma, with a bit of fruity sweetness and a faintly metallic note. As it warms up a touch of honey appears. Somewhat understated across the board.

T - Taste is better, with more sweetness, a touch of buttery pilsner malt, and less overt grain character than the aroma. Finishes with light lemon and herbal hop bitterness. No obvious alcohol, which goes a long way to confirming my suspicions about this really being 7%.

M - Smooth medium body, with a touch of grain to it. Moderate but soft carbonation, lightly sticky finish, and a crisp and clean aftertaste. Again, no perceptible alcohol warmth.

D - Not the most interesting beer, Helles Bock isn't the most exotic style out there. Starts out a bit tepid, but improves significantly once it sits for a few minutes. I'd have this again at the brewpub, but I wouldn't pay $6-7 for another 12oz bottle.

Got it on tap at Barcade in Williamsburg on 4/2/11.

A: Served in a pint glass. Body is clear golden with a small white head.

S: Floral hops over sweet malt. Definitely big on the florally hops.

T: Sweet, fruity malt backbone - think ripe apples and some caramel malt. Finishes clean with florally hops.

M: Call it medium in heft (maybe a tad bit lighter). Feel is slightly slick.

O: Good. I know it's called a winter lager, but I considered this to be a nice early-Spring Bock.

On-tap at the pub, poured into a 6oz tasting glass...A dark but clear gold, good coloring. The head is bright white and keeps about a half finger cap for several minutes. At first the lacing is very full, but falls too quickly. Good start...The aroma is totally dead, very disappointing, only a slight hint of hops...The taste is exceedingly sweet, corn, floral bitter hops help to break the sweetness. Reminds me more of a pilsner with a little black pepper finish. A touch to sweet but this makes this totally crushable at a shocking 7%.

If I had to drink a lager I'd probably go for this, but at Kuhnhenn tough to keep going back to this with so many other options.

On tap at the Solstice Party.

Pours a clear golden/light coppery orange, thin white head forms, drops to a thin ring, few lace spots on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty, quite floral and fragrant, very clean and malty, some breadiness, caramel or honey, nothing special. Taste is similar, very clean maltiness, floral, apricots, thick malty middle, toast, lemony finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation, just a smooth drinking lager. Not too bad, what it lacks in excitement it makes up for in smoothness.

On tap at the Kuhnhenn Brew Pub.

Poured a medium and clear golden color with a smaller sized white head. Aromas of breadiness, grain, caramel, and all around malty. Tastes of grainy/wheat, some bread, and the same maltiness. Light alcohol in the finish.

Enjoyed at the hop devil in NYC.

A: Pours bright and crisp with an average sized white head. Lots of little bubbles and tinges of lace.

S: Nice light aroma. Light bready malts with touches of hops. Not much really going on here.

T: Nice and light. The malts are nice and bready. A touch of sweetness along with light citrus hops.

M: Light in body with ample carbonation.

D: Not bad.

Overall: Not really sure why this is a winter beer. It would do very little to get you thru a cold winters night. The beer is very light, very bubbly, and very drinkable. They should offer this one in the summer.

Had on-tap at the Winter Solstice party last night.

The beer was served to me in a pint glass. It was a nice clear amber with no head or lacing to speak of.

The smell was malty with hints of grain and some breadiness. It has a simple yet enticing aroma.

After taking a couple of sips I notice a nice bittersweet flavor. This is offset nicely by a mild bitterness providing a very balanced brew. Noble hop flavors are definitely present in this one. The finish is very clean and I don't detect the substantial alcohol that is in this beer. It must have changed this year because the menu listed it as 7.2%.

This was a pretty good beer and one of the best craft lagers I have had in a while. It is classified as a bock here but the flavor and appearance seem more like a supercharged pils to me. Highly drinkable, clean, delicious.

grabbed a couple growlers for superbowl sunday...this one for my father in law to drink while he watched the game, and their IPA for me to be able to tolerate the game (not a big football fan). ended up having a couple glasses of this one too as it was quite good.

pours hellow with 1/4" of fine white head. drops fast and leaves some spotty lace.

aroma is nice. light bready malt. hint of dms. very fresh with light earthy hops.

taste is good. nice bready malt. low bitterness. light honey sweetness. a touch fruity. hint of alcohol.

mouthfeel is good. nice light body with a good moderate carbonation level.

drinkability is great. well balanced and hides its alcohol very well. very refreshing and enjoyable.

At the brewpub, Kind of sweet and smooth more than anything else, and not objectionable. Malt caramel sweet is drinkable, but not cloying. Always a honeyish mouthfeel undamental to their lineup. Of course, no alcohol detected here. Another interesting recipe on a rotating release.
I had several weeks later at Pizza Plant as a kind of blind tasting. The server told me it was a stout, so I was disapointed and thought it off, and certainly won't rate it.

from the tap at my favorite brewery. poured a cloudy golden with a nice white head that hung around for a while. aroma, hops, corn, as it warmed the aroma got a litlle more pronounced. flavor corn, hints of lemon, hops. this is one of those beers that should be sold in the summer.
