This is our Loonie Kuhnie recipe with tons of dark malt added to make a black pale ale. Hoppy and malty on the nose, rich maltiness drives the palate of this beer while hops brighten the finish. Hoppy and dark beer lovers should try this brew.

I only had a taste of this in a flight @ Kuhnhenn's, but since there are so few reviews I figured I'd throw in my two cents.
A- Nice, dark brown, small creamy, tan head.
S- The smell was pretty good- very roasted malt, some caramel, but also some citrus underneath that.
T- Same as the smell, but a bit watered down. The roasted malt was there, but it wasn't as full. Same for the caramel, and had a slight citrus hoppy finish. Good flavors, but just not strong enough to really punch.
M- Medium bodied. Slight carbonation. Pretty smooth.
O- I just wish the flavors were as strong and the smells. One of the reasons I love Kuhnhenn is because they are always coming up with new recipes, new beers, and so I can't really knock this. It is a good beer, but I will stick to Loonie Kuhnie. :)

Had on tap at Kuhnhenn Brewery in Warren. Pours a very, very dark brown, basically black in the middle of the brew. Small, light-tan head, most likely so small due to the pour from the tap. Some nice, streaky lacing was left behind, despite the small head. Some weedy, grassy hops on the nose with very faint roasted malts in the background. Nice, clean, inviting smell, a good combination of a hoppy IPA and a roasted, malty ale. The taste doesn't pack quite as much of a punch as the nose, unfortunately. It's a bit thin and watered down; the hop flavor is the slightly more dominant one here, full of wet grass, weeds, and nice pine notes. The roastiness from the malts is there, but much more subdued on the palate than on the nose. I wonder how much of the malt bill went to dark, roasted malts? Couldn't have been much more than a few percent. As it warms up in the glass, I start picking up some buttery, slightly salty notes - actually much more pleasing than it sounds. Some very slight tartness in the aftertaste with light citrus and fruit flavors; grapefruit rind and grapes being the main attractions. Medium carbonation, thin-medium body overall.
Nice attempt at a "black ale". Apparently this is just their Loonie Kuhnie IPA with the use of roasted malts to give it a black color and a slight roasted character. I haven't had the regular Loonie to compare to, but I will soon. This beer was pretty good, nothing too special, but overall pretty tasty.

Great aroma, terrific roast and citrus hops. Taste does not live up to the taste, being rather watered roastiness and hops. Some chocolate.Tired. But Lace lines. Decent drinkability, enjoyed on tap at the brewpub. An Ok beer, but not the best representation of the style.
