The pucker you get when navigating your way through a briar patch is a bit like the one you’ll get when drinking our tart and tangy Blackberry Berliner Weisse, Briar Patch.

This is a beer that is pleasingly refreshing, beautifully purple and features just the right amount of pucker inducing acidity that you love from a Berliner, or 'Florida Weisse.'

It's a solid offering. Blackberries aren't very distinctive, they really just add to the color.

Tried at the brewery. Pours purplish color with a small white head. Aroma of sour vinegar, blackberries, wheat malts. Flavor follows closely with a nice juicy tart blackberry alongside the standard wheaty sour Berliner notes. Light bodied, medium plus carbonation. No a huge fan of the style but this was nice, with the blackberries coming through nicely. Definitely worth a try for fruited Berliner fans.

Poured on tap to a pint glass at the Wetlands, the Swamp Head taproom in Gainesville, FL. This beer was released today, so it’s plenty fresh.

Appearance (3.75): Briar Patch pours with a thin, bubbly, bone-white head that doesn’t last very long before dying down to a thin collar at the edge of the glass. It leaves basically no lacing as the beer recedes . . . the head and retention are both pretty typical for the style. The body, however, is absolutely gorgeous: moderately hazy, and with a dark pink/deep fuschia color containing rich orange undertones and highlights. The body seriously is beautiful.

Smell (4.0): Mild, wheaty malt, light tartness, and a soft berry fragrance. The aroma betrays a light, grainy malt base, which is very nice and fitting for the style, along with a lovely berry aroma that retains the floral character that comes out when they’re pressed and crushed. Very well balanced.

Taste (3.75): Balanced lactic and citric tartness, along with a tangy fruit character that’s one part blackberry skin tannins and one part lactic tang. There’s a soft, grainy malt base built from gentle, slightly biscuity and white, bready starch, but it’s very soft and understated but acts as a great background for the tartness and fruit. The berry sweetness here is very tasteful—it’s soft, not too sweet, and not particularly tart on its own. No funk in this beer, just a clean, lactic tartness and a nice berry flavor. Personally I’d like a more bombastic and funkier flavor palette, but this is extremely clean and tasty just the way it is.

Mouthfeel (4.25): The feel is light and spritzy, with a nice prickle and a soft body that’s on the light side of medium. Very, very refreshing. It finishes lightly dry, and is totally quenching.

Overall (3.75): This is a very nice, clean Berliner with a balanced berry component. It’s easy to drink and decently tart, but balanced with a soft malt base and a very organic, nuanced fruit character. Very tasty stuff, although it’d be great to see them do a funky, wild take on the style.
