Draft offering at mother earth's taproom. Served in a partially filled oversized snifter. Why serve your beer in large glassware and only fill it 60% full? Whatever. The beer pours black in color with a mocha head that is three fingers strong leaving almost an inch of the glass empty before the head even starts to fade. A full wall of patches and spotty lace covers the glassware.
The smell is roasted with plenty of earthen notes, anise, tobacco and citrus hops to contrast. Overall not a bad smelling beer if considered as an american stout. However, the chocolate portion of the brew is really lacking.
The taste is earthen with bakers cocoa and citrus hops immediately noticed. A mild fruity aspect is present before warming alcohol is felt across the finish. This brew has a pleasant roasty appeal that seemingly comes from the roast of the grain, not a chocolate addition.
This is a medium bodied brew with a moderate to lively amount of carbonation. As a porter/stout it was pretty decent. As an imperial or chocolate version, it is lacking. As an imperial chocolate porter/stout it is nearly a failure. It isnt terrible because it does have faint cocoa aftertaste. What is bad is that this is hardly differentiated from their standard oatmeal porter, just a little more alcohol.
