Dave's BrewFarm Midnight Saison. 5.8% ABV.
Dark brown body,with a smallish, but lasting, cola-tinged, yet slightly white head.
Aroma: Sweet dark malt character, cocoa and coffee, with a hint of caramel, held in check with hops, ending on a dry, lightly spicy note.
Taste: An interesting mix: dark malts, citric hops, slightly spicy notes from French saison yeast character. It's a party in my mouth and everyone's invited. It's this and it's that and it's the other thing. Just the littlest bit bitter, a smidgen abrasive, butting up against smooth dark malts and the quirky yeast. Drinks down lovely like.
Although, personally, it doesn't quite mesh together in my favorite way, shall we say.
But, yet another bold experiment from Le LaBrewatoy.
What's the word? "Up all night? Here's the beer for that! 2-row, Victory, Cara Arma, and Carafa III malts, Columbus, Chinook, and Mandarina hops, fermented with a French Saison yeast."

Growler picked up at the BrewFarm two days ago. From the label: "Up all night? Here's the beer for that! 2-Row, Victory, Cara Aroma and Carafa III malts, Columbus, Chinook and Mandarina hops, fermented with a French Saison yeast." So many of Dave's beers aren't even listed on here, so it's always nice when I can get a growler to review. Tasted 20 August 2013.
Pours a very deep brown, dyed red. Clear, though it's dark enough that I need light behind it to see that. Half finger of light tan head, okay retention, nice lacing.
Smell is an interesting mix of saison yeast character and dark woody and nutty malts. Has an interesting roasted grain smell, a bit like burnt bread. The saison yeast adds spice and fullness to a beer that might otherwise be rather hollow. And at time that yeast dominates, leaving those roasted malts behind and making it smell like a typical saison.
Taste is unusual, but delightfully complex. It's a little heavy on the roast, tasting moderately charred at times. But it's got layers of grainy flavors below that, sometimes light, sometimes dark. In the end, the dark wins out,
Feel is quite nice. Medium-bodied, slightly buoyant. Medium carbonation, popping up midway through, vibrating, bringing out the spice, and making things dance.
I'm going back and forth on this beer. At times, it drinks more like a porter. At others, it feels like a spot-on dark saison. I've not had many dark saison, but I dig the way the pieces come together on this. Dave's creations are always unique and interesting, and this one is no exception.
