Clear amber with a thick even head. Sweet malt nose, a little dried fruit. Medium malt body, quite full with a little dryness. Crisp and satisfying.

Can; Pours a clear dark copper with a massive off white cap that lasts...aroma is exceedingly malty, nutty, sweet some spicy grassy notes....flavor is very malt forward, roasty caramel tones in front, hops are present later and intensify in the long wet sweet-malty finish...a clean enough bock but a tad too sweet for my plate.

473 mL can from the LCBO; coded July 30 2020 and served barely chilled.

Pours a clear copper-amber colour, producing over an inch of creamy, buff-coloured foam that settles off within the next five minutes or so. A half-inch band of webbed lacing has been left in its wake, along with a thin collar and some filmy wisps on the surface. It smells of toasted bread, biscuits and grainy malt, with notes of caramel, treacle, fig and raisin; decidedly malt-forward.

Nothing too fancy here, but it's a well-made, traditional bock - flavours of toasted, bready malts, caramel and biscuity sweetness comprise the bulk of the profile. Subtle hints of figgy dark fruit are interspersed within, with a touch of leafy, earthy hop bitterness preceding a malty-sweet aftertaste of treacle and biscuit. Medium in body, with low carbonation levels that weakly agitate the surface of the palate, supplying just a little crispness to this bock's rather smooth mouthfeel. The 6.7% is not particularly prominent, though you do get a little bit of warmth at the back end of the sip - just enough to warm your chest a little on a cold autumn night.

Final Grade: 3.77, a B+. Hop City's Boxcar is a respectable single bock that I had no real issues with. Like the vast majority of bocks, it's malt forward and a little sweet - but importantly, not too sweet, which is my number one most common problem with this style (generally speaking). This is not a style I tend to fall back on very often - partially because there aren't that many good, readily available examples around here - but if this one remains stocked throughout the coming winter months then I expect I'll pick it up once every now and then. Worth trying if you enjoy strong lagers or malt-forward beers.

Pours a beautiful mahogany colour with a nice off-white cap on top. The smell is biscuits and alcohol. The taste adds a bit of sweetness to go along with the boozy notes. Feels heavy and full bodied.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. Marked with code G30 - I think that would be July 30, 2020.

Appearance - Dark auburn colored, great clarity small amount of visible bubbles and a finger of off-white head is poured and fizzles out to a small soapy cap in a couple minutes.

Smell - Rich and malty, hints of caramel and toffee with some bready goodness. Sweet, but not overblown.

Taste - Pretty mild, some bready flavors, some caramel and toffee sweetness and just a little bit of bitterness to keep things balanced. Not quite as intense given the higher ABV as expected. A bit watery, but not at all bad.

Mouthfeel - Medium-heavy bodied leaning towards sticky but the lower carbonation and dry finish prevents that. Easy to drink.

Overall -Not the most flavorful bock, but otherwise a nice tipple that that is easy to drink and hides is robust booze content quite nicely. Well worth a try and while normally a spring time brew, this fits the season quite nicely as well.
