$ 16.70 (Including shipping)/capped bomber ($ 0.759/oz) from Tavour, Seattle, WA.
Undated bottle. Stored at 42 degrees prior to consumption and served at 58 degrees in a hand-washed and hand-dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque, some effervescence. When held to the light, the only penetration is through the meniscus.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.4 cm, aggressive center pour), khaki, high density, good retention, diminishing to a four mm ring fed by effervescence and a complete creamy layer.
Lacing – None. Not surprising at 10.5% ABV and BA.
First pour – Dark brown, clear.
Aroma – 4 – Strong aroma of roasted malt with hints of chocolate and coffee.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins slightly bitter without any transference from aroma to flavor. As it warms above 60 degrees, a slight amount of caramel appears along with slightly organic chemistry lab-like overtones. No alcohol, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3 – Medium, more than watery but less than creamy, lively carbonation.
Impression and summation - 3.5 - Simple but pleasing label. The appearance of the brew itself is also simple but pleasing – typical for a Russian Imperial Stout. The aroma is very good and promises a delicious drink. The palate is a bit thin and seems slightly over-carbonated. The flavor is somewhat of a let-down after the bouquet of the nose. A bit of diacetyl would have gone a long way toward accentuating the caramel. Overall, slightly disappointing.
