Lambic

Distinctly orange brew without any foam in the Brigand chalice. Interesting apple aroma, actually fermenting apples. And it tastes like apple cider vinegar. To me, a Lambic is typically less acidic than the usual Wild Ales. In this case it's just slightly less sour and the promised Brettanomyces seems to have given up in favor of the lactic acid bugs. Certainly a historical experience, for what it lacks in drinkability. You would have to be a sour beer enthusiast to spend the money on this stuff. From the little corked and caged bottle purchased on the West Coast.

2003 vintage.

 

A 750ml corked and caged bottle, 3 years old lambic, bottled in December 2015. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen gueuze glass.

Appearance: A slightly hazy golden orange colour with no head and no lacing.

Aroma: Oak, funk, woodchips, lemon zest, grapefruit, tea, and notes of honey.

Taste: Sour, tart, lemon zest, grapefruit, tea, honey, oak, funk, musty.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with no carbonation.

Overall: Milder than expected, but it’s still got some interesting aroma and flavours.

 

 

This is fine. A little funky on the nose. A little tart on the palate. Tastes like tart apple juice. Pleasant astringency.

 

75 cl corked bottle, I don't remember where I got it, served in a flute glass.
Golden colour, just a hint of head that dissappear in the blink of an eye. No lacing.
Aroma is funky, earthy, bretts, hay, some citrics and green apples, grapes, vinegar.
Medium to light body, rough texture, no carbonation. Dry finish.
Taste follows the aroma.
I expected more sourness and funkiness, but it's really a great beer.

Shared 750 ml bottle at a lambic tasting, Lilland Bryggerihotell, Tau. Hazy orange colour, no head. Very moderate natural carbonation. Strong and pleasant brettanomyces aroma, "farmhouse" notes galore. Sour brettanomyces flavour, notes of lemons. Astringent finish.

 

 

Bottle from Etre Deep gold in color minimal white bubbles. Tart funk on the nose. Earthy funky flavor with a smattering of lemony tartness. Mostly flat. Somewhat plain and one dimensional.

Clear with a faint haze, this displays a darker amber than I'm used to seeing in lambic, topped by a moderately tall khaki foam head that fizzles out to a bubbling film with a raised but thin veil ringing uniformly around the surface's edge.

Exhibiting a touch of cedar the moment I bring it to my lips, it expresses a light acidity before the exceedingly silky, medium-light body glides quickly down lifting up an orange zest exhale. Because it doesn't seem to spend much time on the palate, it may actually be more acidic than it tastes. Aroma adds a pungent funk of overripe peach and a little resin, and that resinous quality carries over in taste along with a touch of crabapple as it warms.

A light spiciness is lifted by its soft effervescence which comes to a tangy yet bone dry finish.

APP - lightly hazy dingy gold
AROMA - citrus, earth, horse, wet hay, musty, melon, floral -baby's breath
FLAVOR - lush citrus, honey, light onion note, slightly grainy, husky, bright dry finish, honeysuckle, firm tartness, slight bitterness
MF -tantalizing acidity that is lightly sharp, pleasantly tannic, low carb

Poured at 52 degrees, the color is deep dark gold/almost orange with excellent clarity; a few initial white bubbles, but really no head; very little/no carbonation save a few tiny bubbles that cling to the side of the glass. Green apples, light funk, musty antique store smells; grapefruit rind, wet wood, earthy hay, straw nose. Layers of tart lemon, grapefruit rind, apricot, green apples and orange peel; dusty funky fruity dry finish. Light dry body; almost zero carbonation; medium tartness, but not quite puckering; moderate acidic/tannic tongue coating. Overall a world class lambic; after 3 years in the barrel and almost 3 years in the bottle, the initial sourness has softened, with the yeast contributing layers of mild funky earth tones and tart citrus fruity flavors; with some light acidity; no alcohol notes from 5% abv; a great warm weather beer that can be enjoyed any time of year.
