Four Peaks’ winter seasonal for 2011, this brew is a ryewine — a barleywine in which rye replaces most of the usual malt. This brew makes use of a malt called chocolate rye and is dry hopped with Hersbrucker. Enjoyed in a tulip during the Four Peaks tap takeover at Flanny's.
Much darker than expected — a deep, impenetrable obsidian. One finger of dense, creamy foam the color of California beach sand slowly recedes, gripping the glass in walls.
Aroma is what I expected, almost like a black barleywine. Big orange notes, floral and grassy hops mix with a subdued roast, burnt bread and caramel.
Spicy rye emerges more in the flavor. The front is nice — a very enjoyable blend of sweet caramel, more bitter burnt malt, rye spice and grass. The finish delivers more rye weirdness and apparently all of the hop bitterness. Flavor drops of dramatically at the swallow, leaving lingering roast and hop bitterness.
Velvety medium body with moderate, prodding carbonation. Just a little fizz as it moves. The 9 percent alcohol numbs the tongue a bit, but isn’t too powerful overall.
A little unfocused and unpolished. Starts promising, but the conclusion needs some work.

A good rye beer, red in color, and suitable for Four Peaks's holiday seasonal. It had a dryer wood grain scent, and it showed up in the first sip. The grainy taste wasn't too overpowering, but played well with the other holiday flavors that were present in the beer. I liked how light it was, but it still had a heavy feel to it. Overall, I enjoyed it, and it's a solid brew.

Had the 2011 winter wobbler on tap at the Tempe Four Peaks brew pub.
Poured into a tulip glass
Poured a dark red almost mahogany with an thin off white head that left decent lacing.
Smells of sweet roasted malt, toffee, and brown sugar,and a fait wiff of alcohol on the end
Taste starts off really sweet, roasted malt, carmel and toffee up front, settles into a nice blend from the sweetness of the malt and the very subtle bite from the hops.
it finishes clean very smooth mouthfeel and no bitter residue to speak of.
overall a great winter brew. the alcohol blends well with the other components for a barley wine. I would suggest trying it out before its gone for the season!

A - Deep, ruby red color with a slightly yellow, off-white head. Head fades slowly and leaves behind a lot of lacing. No head retention.
S - Some slightly roasted malt and caramelized sugar. Some alcohol. Nothing else to speak of. Pretty disappointing.
T - Very nice. Toffee, brown sugar, caramelized sugar, light-roast coffee, roasted malt, sweet, dark fruits. A bit of booze but it complements the flavors. You can taste the subtle, earthier differences from the rye.
M - Slight carbonation and an enjoyable lingering sweetness. Creamy and delicious. Alcohol is hidden well for being 9.1% ABV. Big fan of this unique style for the Winter Wobbler. Nicely done Four Peaks!
