We approached through the chaos — streets swollen with feathers, sequins, and a crowd dressed like Dionysus had lost a bet in a costume shop. Music blasted from every direction. People danced with reckless abandon. The air reeked of sweat, sugar, and unfulfilled promises. You could call it a parade, but that wouldn’t do justice to the carnival of carnality that pulsed through Brussels that day.

Moeder Lambic Fontainas stood in the eye of it all — calm in architecture, stormed in humanity. The crowd spilled from the square into its doors like beer foam breaching the lip of a forgotten glass. Inside was no haven — just a different kind of party. Bodies pressed against tables, voices rising like a hymn to hops and hedonism. Somehow, miraculously, we clawed our way to a lone open table and held it like warlords until the dust settled.

At the bar, it was three deep. The air throbbed with vodka requests, cheap lagers, maybe a mojito or two — the kind of panic ordering that happens when people drink in packs. But I wasn’t there for that. I had no time for gimmickry. I was a man on a mission, a lambic-seeking missile. I ordered two in one breath — because there was no goddamn way I was rejoining that scrum of wristbands and body glitter.

The selection? Exceptional. A living, breathing wall of fermentation — the real stuff, the sacred stuff. Cantillon rarities. Tilquin with enough funk to wake the dead. Gueuzes sharp enough to take the paint off a Fiat. The only problem: no human liver, no matter how fortified, could absorb it all. This is not a place for restraint. It’s a place where your teeth melt and your sins are pickled in oak.

The décor was modern, the vibe accidental. The bartenders, despite being swallowed by the crowd, moved with calm precision — like monks who had swapped robes for black tees and learned to wield a tap instead of a prayer book. The square outside roared, but inside, behind the swirling crowd and foaming glasses, there was clarity: this place matters.

Moeder Lambic isn’t just a stop — it’s a checkpoint. A verification stamp on your beer-soaked passport. Sure, some of the crowd came for shots and social media. But if you know what you’re doing, you come for the wild stuff. The funky stuff. The beer that bites back.

This isn’t the pilgrimage, not quite. That honor still belongs to the holy fermenters across town at that place they carve CANTILLON into like a warning sign. But Moeder Lambic? It’s the riotous cathedral you stumble into along the way — beer in one hand, soul in the other, hoping both survive.

And if they don’t?

Well. There are worse places to be swallowed by the crowd.

One of the top beer bars in the city and happened to be around the corner from my hostel! An extensive tap list with a lot of quality and an obvious emphasis on Belgian beers. A great vibe inside and outside on a beautiful day and friendly, helpful staff. About as good as a beer bar gets. Came back for a second visit and would be a regular if I lived nearby. Bravo!

This is definitely a spot you don't want to miss. Excellent selection of both draft and bottles. Bartenders were all very welcoming and helpful. Great spot to share some bottles!

Far and away one of the most modern beer bars you will find in Europe, this felt very much like an American craft beer bar with a chalkboard listing a very wide variety of styles from younger breweries, while still paying homage to a few of the OGs. Service at the bar is prompt with two potential cash registers at the ready, and the wall of taps is quite impressive. It also seems that they've recently added brewing equipment at the entrance, as I heard some regulars talking about their fascination with the possibilities there.

We had a nice mix of old and new here, including a full snifter of Cantillon St. Lamvinus vs. L'Ermintage's saison, which ironically is right down the street from Cantillon proper. We felt comfortable enough here, and intrigued enough by the menu, to return a second day and also order some flammekueche, a casual but complex enough pizza-like dish with undoubtedly the thinnest crackery crust I've ever had. This was all paired with some nice alternative and electronic music, while on our first visit they blasted some fushion Indian or Persian sound that was bonkers. Most people sat outdoors, but I felt the vibe was nicer inside at this particular bar.

Was there the day before quintescence 2018, sadly didn't have a ticket. But went there with two friendly Americans which with one of them i had an IP trade. We went there and we almost drank the complete list of beers :) Had a chat with the waitress. Great Vibe. Friendly people. Service was good.

Will definately visit again when possible :)

Came here with my wife during a recent trip to Brussels and Munich.

Tried the following:
L'Ermitage Soleil (draft)
L'Ermitage Temple du Ciel (draft)

The Soleil was just okay while the Temple was very good. Large and varied tap selection with everything from hoppy porters to rare sours on our visit. Fun atmosphere at the bar with punk music in the background. We were surprised to see the patio open in October (too cold for us, but still nice to see). Service was abysmal as it took quite a while to order drinks and the bartender abandoned us after serving our first round. We then had to flag down a different employee to order another beer. We would have stayed longer but got the feeling that we weren’t welcome. Our overall experience was disappointing, and we wouldn’t come back.

Fantastic selection, helpful staff and a nice relaxing vibe. If you love Cantillon and are in Brussels, you must visit. The food menu is solid, but lacking any vegan options.

I've been here multiple times. In fact, twice last night -- before and after dinner. Always a couple Cantillons on tap, always some other interesting local stuff. Staff is usually friendly, but slow (at least it appears that way to an impatient American). I keep going back to it it, so I'd definitely recommend it.

Moeder Lambic is a Brussels institution that has done so much to promote and enhance Bruxellois beer culture.

Exceptional quality, service, and selection, pretty much the gold standard experience.

Modern decor inside, sitting outside you get a full view of the open square of Fontainas Place. Brussels in all her glory. A lambic brewery once existed across the square, Den Baert. The nearby Delhaize Proxy supermarket across from 't Spinnekopke was once the Ketelbant lambic brewery, many decades ago. There's brewing history everywhere in this magnificent city. 2024 update, the square has tacky new high-rise condos built over it.

It was busy, but we were well taken care of by multiple rotating staff members out on the patio. Well curated selection, with a great mix of local drafts and those from abroad. Cantillon rarities, Tilquin Quetsche, Kernel, Lambrate (IT), Alfried (AT), Rascals (IE), and the very latest from locals L'Ermitage and No Science. Finally topped things off with a bottle of Tilquin Pinot Noir shared with old and new friends. Our first day in Brussels was off to a roaring success.

How not to run a bar.
MOEDER LAMBIC Brussels.
Horrible people. Crap service.

So you think you can rest on your “4.8” reviews - keeping customers waiting for 20 minutes when you’re obviously not busy. And then when they complain about waiting so long, you show them the door.
‘We don’t care what you think’ you say.
‘We have 4.8 reviews’, you say.

Well here’s a -10 review for being so arrogant and forgetting that the customer experience should be at the centre of your operations.
Obviously not in your case.
And so you WILL fail because we the people now have the power, the power to shine the light and turn it on you. Sure we can walk away taking our currency and our patronage with us. But now we can warn countless others about your lack of customer service and arrogance.
So here’s a -10 @moederlambic

Visited at opening on September 15th.

Bar was empty for most of our visit on a Friday morning waiting to head to the airport.

Moeder has more taps than I found customary for Belgium, and the selection was very good. They have some special Cantillons brewed for them, and our server informed us that Belgians don't really drink sours, so their versions are much milder, and on cask. Had all three Cantillons on tap, and they were of course served in correct glassware.

Vibe was laid back, and service quick and friendly. Didn't try the food, which seems limited to charcuterie and cheese, but it looked good.

Overall, a bar I would gladly return to.

Visited after a day at the Brussels beer fest. I sat inside at the bar, and I did not have any food. They had an impressive selection, including a number from Cantillon. I tried a Vigneronne for the first time, and it was obviously served in the correct glass. They had a number of lambics, but also a few stouts. Service was good, although they were busy (Sat night) so I didn't get much attention.

We stopped here to have lunch and to enjoy their beers. They were not busy for an early Monday afternoon. (This was a late April visit.) This place has the feel of a neighborhood bar, so we liked the vibe. There was a row of booth seating along the wall opposite the long bar, plus some outdoor tables under the roofed area that covered the front sidewalk/patio.

Three beers with Moeder's label (contract brewed) were on the menu so we chose one of them plus a guest tap to go along with our food. (About 40 taps are available.) Both beers were very good. The food menu is not extensive, but what we ordered was very good. This is definitely a place for a return visit if we ever travel to Brussels again.
