On tap at the brewpub. I was pretty excited to stumble across an unexpected -bal aged beer!
Clear, deep purplish brown color, almost the same shade as an eggplant. Much darker and clearer than the base beer. A small off-white head sits on top.
The aroma is interesting. Lots of caramel and dark fruit, cherries especially, with oak, bourbon, and alcohol. Nothing too Belgian about it despite the fact that the base beer is Belgian style.
Flavor is pretty nice. I initially pegged this as an old ale around 8% ABV. Turns out I was way off on the style and a little over on the ABV. That gives you an idea of what the flavor is like though. Mildly sweet and very malty with a strong dark fruit presence, with cherry being the dominant note. Some oak and bourbon presence from the -bal aging. Slight tartness.
Slick on the mouthfeel with medium body and a low level of carbonation.
This was solid, but not quite up to the level of many other bourbon barrel beers I've had, and considering I'm rating it against -bal aged beers and not just fruit beers, it gets a lower rating.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
