William Milo Stone wasn’t ordinary, and neither is the Belgian Style Imperial Stout we craft in his honor. General Stone was a wounded Civil War Hero from Knoxville, Iowa who served as governor at the end of the war. This stout is bold and complex, just like Stone, who helped convince his friend Abraham Lincoln to run for president. Extra helpings of Belgian black malts contribute to the wonderful chocolate, coffee, and toffee characteristics. If Stone were around today, this is the beer we would offer in toast to his courage as we gathered around to hear stories of how he and his fellow Iowans fought to save a nation.

Thanks to Victory_Sabre for this one from his side box from NBS NIF #8. 12oz stubby bottle poured into 14oz teku. Poured a solid black color, no light from any angle, with just over a half-inch of light brown head that dissipated quickly and left no lace.

There was some licorice at the front of the nose, and there was a touch of smoke behind that. After further review, a hint of yeast spice, and a couple things I couldn't quite name were also apparent. On the tongue, licorice was the lead, a nice base beer was the foundation, the spice tickled the back, and the smoke lingered.

The body was quite thinner than I would have liked, thinner even than a lot of Porters, and had a finish that was on the sweet side. Drinkability was good, I would have this again, but I'm not sure I'd have two in a row. Overall, a nicely pleasant beer, worth trying if you see it.

Pours pitch black, with a 1 finger brown head. The head retention is average.
The nose is very minimal. Just a slight chocolate aroma. Not much else.
Taste - Well, this is unexpected - smoke. I wasn't expecting a smoke flavor to this beer. I'd assume that they smoke the malts added to get this. Some chocolate notes behind the smoke. Some other flavors, that I can't put my finger on also are working in this beer.
The body is maybe a bit lighter than I'd expect. Not watery, just a bit lighter. A bit of a warming feeling from the alcohol.
Interesting beer overall. Wasn't expecting the smoke, but it really was a pleasant surprise. Delicious Iowa beer.

Poured from 12oz bottle into glass. Has some stamps on the label, but no clear dating information found.
Dark cola brown colored body, with brown highlights when presented to light. Tan head (two fingers from pour, settles to creamy cap). Brown sediment at bottom of bottle. A few spots of lacing.
Aroma of dark roasted malts and toasted brown sugar/molasses.
Mineral taste of dark roasted malts. Dark chocolate, espresso like coffee, and molasses join in. Whiff of vanilla at the end. Very little bitterness. Leather and tobacco are minor components of the overall taste.
Medium, somewhat creamy mouth feel.
Certainly different from a standard American Stout, but good in its own way (balanced with extra sugar, no bitterness, smooth, and enjoyable mouth feel, and tasty dark malts for a stout).

i have to respectfully disagree with the other cat who has reviewed this one and say i really like it because its something different. they call it a belgian stout, so we need to look at that, especially next to expectations as an american imperial stout, where i could see it being a little confusing. this is not fermented with any sort of belgian yeast from what i can gather, not at all, instead, its obviously got some specialty belgian malts happening, and may even have that candy sugar addition for extra fermentables, sort of brown sugary or even molasses-esque, kind of raw and dark, unrefined, but well proportioned in the flavor mix here. i like the extra sugars, and the roasted flavor without all the normally parallel bitterness, this has some body without being too much, and has the right finish for a stout with just a little of this baked vanilla thing, subtle red grape, wet tobacco, and mild alcohol, i think its unique and awesome. this isnt for everyone, i know that, but its something much different in a style that can at times all run together. one of the better peace tree beers i have had, and worth a few bucks for the bottle. im into it.

William Fucking Milo Stone. The rarest stout on earth. I sold five gold teeth to acquire this bastard.

It pours a dark black color with a giant yeasty frothy head.

The aromas are of roast beef, bubble gum, soy sauce, and candi sugar.

Flavor is like eating steak and chewing bubble gum simultaneously. Metallic dirty water after taste.

Feel is on point with being creamy and mostly carbonated.

Overall no thanks, I'll pass forever and always. It got dumped like your worst psycho girlfriend.
