Draft pour into nonic glass at Redwood Curtain Brewery in Arcata.
A: Slightly hazy, brassy golden color with one finger of persistent off-white foam head. Heavy continuous lacing remains on the glass.
S: Crisp green plant stems stand out, with less obvious tropical fruit that is clean and hops-derived. The hops qualities behave in dynamic fashion together, while their intensity is on the high side for the style. Little in the way of malt or yeast contributions are present; very clean overall.
T: Begins dry, with aggressive tropical fruit and subordinate coniferous hops that are made remarkably bright and lively due to tasted citric acidity. Continued hops aromatics turn more toward grapefruit citrus peel amidst crackery malt that really pops. The finish is moderately bitter, with salty minerality that primes the palate for more.
M: Thin to medium viscosity, wet and slightly acidic on the palate, with moderate carbonation.
D/O: A whopper of a first encounter with the beers of Redwood Curtain, this ale appears very modern as it oozes exciting and assertive Citra hops qualities. Its excellence comes totally unexpected; it drinks just like a 3 Floyds Zombie Dust in terms of being approachable and endurable on the palate, but seems to clearly exceed that other beer in the way it is so assertive and unapologetic for the style.
