Poured into a tulip: pours a deep murky cola black. Solid finger-worth of soft creamy tan head. Good retention, good lacing.
The nose starts off pastel: ashy and grainy. Squash adds some layer and nuance, but this is driven by roasted/burnt grains. A little bit musky, like a dusty haybale.
Taste starts out surprisngly creamy and a bit sweet, before dipping back into the straight grainier side alluded to in the aroma. The squash adds a round vegetal, plant-y note before the finish gives a tart kiss and leaves.
Smoothe and very drinkable. Creamier than I expected, and the squash is not the sweet/pumpkin pie spice that most autumnal gourd-ians tend to be, it is definitely a savory exploration of some of the less appreciated gourds. Good balance of grainy farmhouse malts, a hint of creamy sweetness, and a bitter that is subdued more than sharp, all tied together with a current of squash.
