Sherry barrel Geuze

In the spring of 2019, we received a series of very old Oloroso, PX and Amontillado barrels through a local Jerez cooperage. The aromas were a mix of typical fine sherry notes and toasted, peated characteristics, which we have never experienced before. However, after a year of bottle conditioning – because of the higher peated aromas, albeit balanced – we decided to release this bottle not as a Zenne y Frontera, but as a peated geuze. This blend, like blend 61, comes mostly from Oloroso barrels. The weighted average age of this blend, upon its release, is almost three years old. The oldest lambik was brewed in April 2018.

750 mL bottle. Blend 61. Orange body, slightly Cloudy. Smells of citrus, sherry, oak, and a distinct peat aroma. Tastes even more peaty. Oak and peat blend together. Dried grass, mild citrus sourness, finishes with more peat and oak. Medium heavy. Definitely tastes stronger than a normal lambic. I've had this a few times and the peat and sherry elevate both blends above other geuzes.

Bottle: Poured a hazy yellow color lambic with a large foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of funky ester with some oak notes and light peated notes. Taste is also a mix of funky ester with some peated notes and oak/woody notes with some tart notes. Body is about full for style with good carbonation. Nice lambic with a good level of complexity but I would have liked the peated notes to be more present.

Cloudy yellowish orange pour with two fingers of pearl white foam. Aromas of musty barnyard, barrel and horseblanket funks with wet rustic oak, slightly sour orange, flowers and a hint of dry earth. Taste has more cheese cloth than horse blanket, otherwise the same except sour orange and lemon is much larger. Funky and sour in a classic belgian way, dries out through the sip, medium-light bodied airy after initial sour burst.

A different season blend: Orange body with two fingers of white foam. Cork pops right off even after all these years! Smell has wonderful, barnyard, funk with lemon, slight yogurt funk and soft oak. Oh my God this is so good: classic barnyard and barrel funk with mildly sour lemon, lesser so green apples, pressed flowers, and the classic sour yeast and grain with a touch of apricot and subtle pear as it warms. Feel is way more funky than sour, but both represented, no acidity at all so clean. This is a fantastic gueuze!

Amber color. Hazy with tight dense head. Full nose. Deep farmhouse funk and earthiness. Taste is well-balanced with good depth of character with abv. Incredibly smooth.

Foggy orange-amber with a tall and lumpy eggshell white head settling to a persistently thick blanket and bubbly collar.

I just wasn't sure their description here was actually going to apply to the resulting experience, but it really does exhibit a touch of earthy, Scotchy peat right up front, which returns in the finish, drying and bittering it up fairly well. It's a leafy, almost dirt-like characteristic, but thankfully without any of the BAND-AID or plasticky rubber obscenities you might expect.

This peating plays well with pleasantly tart, mildly syrupy citruses that verge into passion fruit and pear, all accented nicely by those classic seedy qualities of a 3F geuze. It ultimately makes the overall experience a tad funkier than your usual OG, but in a unique way. Over time, a little soggy cracker malt emerges.

The medium body has a firm fizz and finishes bone dry.

A 750ml corked and caged bottle, blend°62, season 19/20, bottled on 15th April 2020. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen gueuze glass.

Appearance: A nice clear golden orange colour with a near two finger white head that dissipated fairly quickly to a nice thin but replenishing cap, while leaving some nice lacing.

Aroma: Funky, barnyard, musty, dusty, oak, green apple, pear, with lemony notes.

Taste: Peaty, leather, funk, barnyard, hay, oak, sherry, apple, lemon, lime.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: It was interesting, as I didn’t get any hint of peat in the aroma, but it was very obvious in the flavour. Generally I enjoy peat, and it was nice here, but if I had to compare it to the regular Oude Geuze, I think that I prefer the regular version just that slightly bit more as the lack of peat just made it more refreshing. Still good though.

L: Generic blonde.
S: Sharp peanut notes.
T: Strong bold lush breetty pinte lambic with light floral body and a dry earthy finish.
F: Full, lush grass.
O: A very full-boded lambic from their usual flavor.
