Blend n° 63 • bottling date: 16/04/2020 • bottle count: 1530
… so it was in the summer of 2018, we had the honour of visiting Frederiksdal, the renowned Danish kirsebaer orchard and cherry wine maker. Not long after, September 13th 2019, we received a few hundred kilos of their sour cherries and macerated them on a charred oak barrel. We used a gentle 3 Fonteinen lambik from one barrel and two different brew days and macerated the lot for almost seven and a half months. While blending, we added one- and two-year old lambikken from three different barrels and three different brews, and some lambikwort from three different brews.
The final fruit intensity is 400 grams of kirsebaer per litre of this special version of Kriek.

insane beer, insane gift from a friend, insane kriek session, and this was the showpiece among showpieces, cherries of lore here, that i will always associate with mikkeller, right or wrong but thats how i learned about them, and we brought it full circle in this sitting, a mikkeller spontan cherry version with these same cherries from 2020, a boon oude kriek mariage parfait from 2022, which i believe mikkeller uses as their base juice for those spontan beers, and that boon is at the same 400 grams per liter fruit intensity as this one, which is done with the heady cherries, i love the interconnectedness of it all, and to have these in the same sesh was legendary. this is super dark just like the wine, port wine colored really, beet root, more purple than red, and pretty thick, some haze heavying it up a bit, modest head and lighter carbonation, the color alone makes it look incredible, the fruit intensity appears absurd. the aroma on this is awesome, musty and old, a bloody richness to the cherries, high minerality and dark soil, black cherry depth, prune and pipe tobacco or even flavored shisha character to this, still some raw wheat and general graininess appreciable, tons of wood, strong red wine, lots of tannins, trace vanilla and fall spices, loaded with nuance, more funky than sour to me, the acid seems fruit derived and the funk from the ferment, obviously some mature lambic at the center of this, just crazy. the flavor is just as good, wildly robust cherry flavor, almost cooked down and concentrated to me, id love to one day eat one of these cherries right off the tree at the source, but if this is as close as i ever come, i can live with that. cherry for days, the darkest expression of it, good cabernet, blackberry, and wet tobacco, light cocoa even, its that dark and earthen, lots of body too, a little dense even, almost pulpy, and increasingly sharp as it sits. love the fermentation, recognizable from these guys for sure, but this one is about the fruit. a well aged and super special beer, i can still taste it, hopefully thats always true. about as memorable a kriek as i have ever had, totally elevated and exceptional.

A 750ml corked and caged bottle, blend°63, season 19/20, bottle 1253/1530, bottled on 16th April 2020. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass.
Appearance: It was a clear ruby red colour with a slight purple hue, and a thin pinkish head that dissipated fairly quickly to a ring around the glass while leaving some lacing.
Aroma: Cherry, oak, funk, bandaid, almond notes, with a splash of lemon zest.
Taste: Sour, tart, cherry, funk, oak, vinegar, and lemon.
Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Great aroma, and a fruit lambic that is enjoyable and easy to drink.
