This is a most Minnesotan Doppelbock, sturdy enough for the next polar vortex. It's surprisingly refreshing for such a full-bodied lager, with a hefty portion of rye in the malt bill to lend a pleasant edge to the deceptively smooth mouthfeel. Those Reinheitsgebot purists over in the ancestral home of lager will surely be peeved and confused by the addition of a blend of Red Sombrero and Papa New Guinea roasts from our friends over at Up Coffee Roasters, but they never had to survive winters quite like this. And they'll take consolation in knowing that no German goats were sacrificed (or involved at all, really) in the making of this multi-layered malt monster.

On-tap at Fulton Beer, Minneapolis, MN
A: The beer is clear amber in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a thin collar consisting of white bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of coffee are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of cold brew coffee along with hints of raisins.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I liked how this beer incorporated the coffee but still tasted like a doppelbock.
Serving type: on-tap

Pours a very dark amber color. 1 finger off white head. Decent head retention, with minimal lacing on the glass as it dissipates.
The nose is fairly light. There's really only the coffee coming across, but it's very muted. I also just get a slight pepper aroma.
Taste - Up front I get a slight caramel flavor. This does linger. There's a bit of the coffee on the backside, but it's not strong, and somewhat muted.
Body is pretty decent. There's a bit of a pop from the carbonation that lingers on my palate.
A doppelbock infused with coffee actually does work. I like this.

12oz can. Stamped canning date appears to be '02/25/19'.
Medium amber colored body, looks to be mostly clear. One finger of beige head with tightly packed bubbles sticks around as a creamy cap. Leaves behind some wide patches of lacing.
Aroma is bready malt, but there definitely is coffee smell here.
Taste has two main components of bready malts and rich coffee, and there is a slightly sour bite from the rye malt.
Medium plus mouth feel, with a creamy texture. Very good carbonation.
While the coffee does add some complexity to the taste, I don't think it ultimately leads to a better tasting Doppelbock. I like the rye bite, which balances against the sweet malts. Well made but may be too complicated for its own good.

Can. Khaki head. Copper color. Clear.
Lots of coffee here. Caramel, brown sugar, toffee, dark dried fruits and apple skins. Medium bodied. A fun twist on the style. I enjoyed it.

Good coffee aroma and flavor which is good, because that is almost all you get. One dimensional. I am having a hard finding any doppelbock. Looks good with a solid head and plenty of lacing. Also a solid body and carbonation.
