Handpump halfpint at the King William IV. Somehow both this and the Winter Saison were available simultaneously; I assumed that, being springtime, this would be the fresher beer. As it has the same ABV as the current listing for simply Brodie's Saison, this could be an alias. It was clearly labeled "Summer Saison" on the pump clip, though, so I assume it's a different beer.
A: Clear gold body under a mound of coarse white foam. Ok retention, spotty lace. Not bad.
S: Gnarly. Strong malt, huge fruity esters (tons of pear, some banana), and a bit of chalky minerality. Strange, but not bad.
T: Opens with sweet fruitiness, followed by even more sweet fruitiness, and finished with chalkiness and light booze. A bit too sweet for the style, but interesting all the same.
M: Medium-bodied with light stickiness and some creamy carbonation. A little heavy, but ok.
O: I was expecting something significantly crisper and spicier for a Summer Saison, as this was far down the road to heavy maltiness and oppressive fruit. While it wasn't what I was hoping for, it was definitely drinkable and distinctive.
Cheers!
