Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a very dark nearly opaque brown. Only a hint of a medium brown head dissipating quickly to a ring around the glass and light lacing. Light aroma of dark malt, chocolate and faintly vinous. Flavor is subtle dark roasted malt and dry red wine, berry fruit slightly sour and a bit of acidity from the oak barrel.. Finishes dry and vinous. Carbonation is low to absent and moderate mouth feel. The underlying beer seems to be a mild English ale, but the wine barrel flavor dominates the flavor. I'm not sure what they were trying for here, but it doesn't quite work for me. I was pretty excited about this ale and bought two bottles. I'll age the other for a few years to see if the ale reasserts itself. It's going to be an epic wine vs. beer battle here.
