750 mL growler. Bright hazy orange. Smells very citrusy. Orange and tangerine. That distinctive Nelson aroma, too. Tastes a little less bright. Citrus. Some pale malt and a spicy finish. Medium light body. Medium carbonation. Nice without being too distinctive.

Consumed 6/25/16, growler filled earlier today

A: Glows gold with some tangerine highlights - lightly hazy - pours with a medium size, white head - fades to a wispy cap and a small collar, leaves some streaks of lacing

S: An interesting amount of citrus and fruit from some rather quirky hops - some citrus, mostly orange - some herbal and grassy notes - hop resin and pine - tropical notes - some lime - green grapes - zesty fruit and some spice, but soft overall - soft pale malts, light bread, super clean

T: Fruity and crushable - some citrus, with orange and some lime - herbal and lightly resinous hops - some bright green grapes and white wine from the Nelson - an undercurrent of tropical flavors, with some melon - soft, pale malts - light bread - a touch of earth, but mostly super clean and super drinkable

M: On the light side of medium , smooth with a crisp, dry, clean finish

O: 'Cause I depend on me

Pale ales from Hill Farmstead are consistently bright, clean, and refreshing. Self Reliance is no exception. The combination of hops tastes somewhat experimental, but it mostly works. At the very least, this is among the most crushable beers fro m HF.

great looking beer, as is practically every hill famstead. aromas of bubblegum, sweet bready malts, grass, spicy pine, dank earth, citrus zest, orange, pineapple, hint of mango, does have a bit of that grape character. palate follows, super clean and super refreshing. grassy, sharp citric notes, bready malt, definite sweeteness and herbaceous green note going well with a subtle piney bitterness. mouthfeel is appropriate for the style. overall, although this isnt my favorite offering from HF, its clear that they are kings in the game of producing a clean, bright, refreshing pale ale that is often too drinkable for its own damn good!

L: Bright yellow and pale orange in color, hazy though not murky. Poured a 1 finger head, white in color.
S: Tons of citrus. Very different from a citra hopped beer in that there is no grapefruit, it is straight orange rind and lemon zest, very lively and fresh. Also detectable is a sweet, grape bubblegum aroma in the back. Lastly, malts have a small presence, very cereal like and toasty.
T: Very crisp, clean, and citrusy. Quite honestly I have never had an PA with such a clean citrus character. Malt base provides a very mild sweetness to balance out hop bitterness. Bitterness is also very peppery and herbal, not dank, much akin to a pils.
F: Typical HF, pillowy mouthfeel. The velvety nature of the mouthfeel balances out dryness of the bitterness. Carbonation is medium.
O: Different from the galaxy fruit-juice bomb IPAs, however I absolutely loved this beer. Right up my alley. Super refreshing on a hot summer day. Loved this hop combo, could drink this every day.
