Most IPA’s made by U.S. craft brewers fall under the American IPA category. American IPA’s are higher in alcohol than English IPA’s and much hoppier. They are made with high quantities of American hop varieties that provide an intense hop aroma of citrus, floral, and piney characters and a pronounced bitterness. West coast breweries have been given the unofficial title of making some of the hoppiest and most intense IPA’s on the market.
Blackfoot’s West Coast IPA is made with Montana grown and malted 2 – Row pale malt and British crystal malts. In the west coast fashion we aggressively hopped it with six different varieties that are traditionally used in American IPA’s. It has a golden orange-ish color with a creamy white head. The aroma is primarily hoppy with citrus, floral and piney notes. The flavor is dominated by a variety of hop flavors, a prominent yet balanced bitterness, and a touch of sweetness.
