Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a medium golden amber with a thin white head that slowly builds to a fine, thick cap with great retention. Aroma of mildly grainy and pale malt, apple, pear, white wine and clove. Flavor is pale and candi malt, Belgian yeast, green apple, pear, white wine, clove, moderately dry and finishes slightly tart and spicy. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess, nice mouth feel. Aroma and flavor are a spot-on Belgian tripel profile with clear notes from the wine barrelling. Good fruit flavors from the yeast and the wine melds pretty nicely with the base tripel. ABV well hidden. I'd kind of like to taste the tripel used for this barreled version, it seems quite traditional and well made. I'm not sure the wine flavors added anything for my palate, but it seemed like a well chosen combination. A bit of a gamble for a barrelled ale from a small, unknown brewery, but it is a fine introduction and an impressive barrel aged tripel. Glad I found this.
