A very roasty and full-bodied, Foreign-style extra stout. This wonderfully rich stout gets most of its dark color from lots of unmalted roasted barley. Flaked barley and torrified wheat are added to enhance its creamy head. Bronze Medal Winner, 2007 North American Beer Awards, American Stout Category.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, close to opaque. A really nice light khaki head forms which has nice staying power and lacing.
Smell: Smells of roastiness, dark chocolate and coffee are pretty stong. Classic stout smells, and very aromatic at that.
Taste: Quite a bit of roast and coffee bitterness makes up the bulk of the taste, with a hint of sweetness in there. The beer clearly trends towards bitterness over sweetness, but it's still excellent.
Mouthfeel/Overall: Just a hair under medium bodied with noticeable carbonation. Not necessarily the creamiest bodied stout but not bad either. Overall, a good, traditional style stout that is pretty tasty. Would definitely have again.

Body is completely black and a hard pour produces a rocky tan head that is well-retained. Aroma shows roasted grains and chocolate, a bit of mustiness, and a slight suggestion of licorice. Almost like a flourless chocolate cake.
Flavor-wise, Double Black is lead by an intense roasted aspect, followed by bready grains and baker’s chocolate, with bitter coffee and a faint smokeyness somewhere back in there. Mouthfeel is on the heavier side - chewy enough, and somewhere between a typical stout and the bigger double stouts. Carbonation is medium and suits the body well.
Nice beer to take your time with. Along with North Fork, this is a long time favorite. Very rich and roasty stout for the ABV. Glad to see they are still doing it as well as ever.

A: dark brown, to black. Thin creamy tan head. Appropriate.
S: rich cocoa, roasted malts. Some coffee bitterness. Nice and very much in style.
T: smooth chocolate flavors continue from smell. Only faint coffee flavors, limited bitter notes. Nice finish.
M: creamy smooth with medium carbonation. Nice.
O: third beer of the evening, so maybe my review is a little skewed in favor of this little brewery at this point. But this stout is very creamy smooth, not harsh, and oh so easy to drink. If I didn't need some food, I would easily have another.
