Poor Richard’s Ale is based off of one of Benjamin Franklin’s homebrew recipe; a rich, dark, malty beer brewed with corn and molasses. Corn and molasses, as well as other adjuncts, were commonly brewed with in colonial times because malted barley was hard to come by. Blackfoot’s Poor Richard’s Ale is light brown in color with a rich malty flavor that is highlighted with notes of caramel, biscuit malt, and toffee. Crafted to remove gluten.

neat take on a wintery strong ale here, corn and molasses in play, unique, but not super sweet, like its largely fermented out, and it was a treat to encounter this on the cask engine when we visited, perfect format for this, even though we rarely see stronger beers served this way, it really works! didnt know they had such a robust cask program here, just another reason to love this brewery! pretty amber color here, matte luster, short of brown but quite deeply colored, creamy cask head on it, foamy and whipped and beautiful. the nose is lovely, open right away, raisin and toffee, dark bread, spice cake fruitiness, old world ale yeast kind of english, molasses comes through to me without it being sugary, subtle leathery depth, spice character as a nuance, a long boiled richness, love that the ferment is prominent, and i think the alcohol is pretty well hidden on this. cozy to drink even without it being outwardly boozy, festive without being spiced per se, but there is like gingerbread and even white pepper essence to it, definite dark fruit, raisin and date, a toasty warmth to the malt too, a maple note, modest residual sweetness, long aftertaste, nice for the season. bready and filling in a nice way, trace astringency late, not out of place for the style, sort of hits like an old ale, which im into. the cask mouthfeel is dialed too, gentle and kind of creamed, not too much body here, drinkable for what it is, cool and unique recipe and fantastic execution and cask conditioning!
