A growler filled at River House on February 27.
A: A reddish hue, giving away the berries immediately. I'd call it a darker rosé, plenty red. Caramel colors add a bit of heft without obscuring it. A small head, practically nonexistent, leaves only a wispy band.
S: Raspberry and blackberry are dominant, sweeter than one would expect. The fruits are puree, principally sweet with a very soft bite. Plenty of fruit but never cloying.
T: Mmmm blackberries. Mmmm raspberries. The two are sweet, resting nicely atop a biscuity caramel base. The puree adds a syrupy thickness, bogging down the body a bit. Overall, I think that this ale nicely straddles the line between too much and too little fruit. The finish shows off more of the natural fruit flavor, much less sweet and sugary.
M: The mouthfeel is sweet and dry, alternating back and forth. The bready base adds just enough of a diversion. A fruit beer that I can get behind.
D: As with many fruit beers, the ale seems filling, too sweet for its own good. A few glasses, though, are worth that unpleasant side effect.
