A traditional smoked lager modeled after the smoked beers of Bamberg using rauch (smoked) malt. Beechwood smoke is used to dry the barley during malting, resulting in a smoky aroma and hint of smoke in the flavor. Single decocted, spunded and lagered forever. Biersal is the perfect balance between the malt and smoke with medium hop bitterness and a clean lager fermentation character.

Tasted at source in April 2022.

Very dark with 2 finger foam, lingering lace.
Wood smoke, roasted malt caramel nose.
Tastes follows from the nose. Smoke well integrated with the relatively rich malty goodness. Slightly meaty, good Dunkel style weight, finishing with smoked toast.
Surprisingly clean for a rauchbier, well balanced and dry, while still light on it's feet.
It's a very crushable and well made smoked beer for the style.

Crowler filled 3/12/22

Sadly, this is my last Notch beer from my first trip there. It’s honestly been an eye opening experience trying their beers. They were always on my radar but going there and experiencing everything super fresh along with the taproom experience has put them high up for me. Let’s see how they do with smoke

Pours a clear amber brown with a beautiful ruby glow and 2 fingers of off white head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves decent lacing

Usually when the style leans hard into the meat smoke vibe it’s overbearing, but it’s done elegantly here. I’m picking up on aromas of smoked ham, bread crust, sweet caramel, light black pepper, earthy hops, and toast

The same applies in taste, it’s meaty but well done. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting beechwood smoke, smoked ham, herbal hops, rye toast, and light caramel. The swallow brings notes of beechwood smoke, biscuit, caramel, earthy hops, light meat, and red malt

A light medium body pairs with gentle tingling carbonation from the smoke, resulting in a zesty and somewhat sharp beer. Finishes mostly dry but with a balanced sweetness

This one is just delightful. It’s balanced in all the right ways. I need more Notch

Canned 12/01/20
Pours an off-white fizzy small head with med retention, a bit of lacing, darker but clear auburn to mahogany color

Nose brings a nice smoke, not overpowering but a light campfire smoke, some sweet toasted reddish malt and bread crust, touch of caramel and biscuit,

Taste brings more smoke but again a mild smoke, light campfire or smoked meat character, more toasted reddish malts with bread crust, biscuity flavors, a touch of caramel, soft juicy lager with some decoction malt complexity, a hint of chocolate even, mild herbal spicy hop notes with a bit of bitterness, dry soft lager finish, med-lighter bitterness

Mouth is med bod but soft lager with some decoction layer feels, med to lighter foamy carb

Overall another great Notch beer, good base dunkel with decoction lager, and nice smoke that doesn't overpower, enjoyable
