Franconian style smoked wheat beer rarely found outside of the Franconian region of Bavaria. Brewed with racuh pils malt and wheat, open fermented for maximum aroma and flavor, with beechwood smoke, clove and banana aromas formed from our unique decoction mashing process.

On tap at Notch Brighton

I’ve only had a wheated Rauchbier once before, the Schlenkerla one. I wasn’t sure how that one would work out but it ended up being quite good. Given this is Notch, I have pretty high expectations for this one too. Let’s see what it’s all about

Pours a cloudy yellow gold with 3 fingers of creamy off white head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing. A bit sad for head retention given the Hefe base, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt since they served it in a 1L mug

The smoke is surprisingly light in the nose, more of a complement than the whole thing. I’m picking up on aromas of clove, overripe banana, dark bread, beechwood smoke, earthy wheat, orange zest, and nutty malt

Likewise in taste, the smoke just adds more of a much appreciated tang than anything. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting banana, lemon zest, toasted oak, campfire smoke, spicy clove, wheat bread, and floral hops. The swallow brings notes of campfire smoke, spicy clove, honey, overripe banana, floral hops, and earthy wheat

A light medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a crisp and sharp beer. Finishes a tad sticky but nothing that ruins the feel completely

This is really good, better than I had expected actually. And to do a better take on what Schlenkerla was going for is damn impressive
