On tap at Notch Brighton
Birthday beer! Well, not my first one of the day, but my first review of the day. Notch doing a Rye Lager sounds right up my alley, and I’m sure it’ll go good with the empanadas I got from next door, so let’s stop wasting time and just get into it
Pours a mostly clear yellow gold with 2 fingers of creamy white head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing
The rye adds a nice touch to the nose, just a subtle spice but it’s nice. I’m picking up on aromas toasted grain, lemon zest, grassy hops, spicy rye, sweet honey, orange zest, and white pepper
The taste is pretty similar, just a little bite to it but ultimately smooth. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting lemon zest, crackery malt, sweet honey, cereal grain, peppery hops, and light pear skin. The swallow brings notes of white pepper, toasted grain, crackery malt, spicy rye, white grape, and light grassy hops
A light body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a crisp beer. Finishes a bit watery and thin unfortunately but it has enough flavor to back that up
This is solid stuff. It’s pretty different for Notch but still familiar
