Notch's 13th anniversary beer! Triple decocted, open fermented, naturally carbonated and lagered for forever. We employed an intensive triple decoction mash to create a delicate yet deep malt character and then boiled the wort for two hours. Open fermented, naturally carbonated and maturated in horizontal lagering tanks for months, this process is all but impossible for modern day US brewers.

Solid appearance. An inch-tall, tight and fluffy, bright white crown rose above the crystal clear, pale golden yellow body. The head slowly dropped to a thick, lasting collar. After each sip, some streaky, spotty lacing trickled down the sides of the glass.
The nose was pleasant but fairly subtle. Crisp and bright initially. Lemony with a touch of hay. As the head receded, the aroma became even more subdued. Some grainy malt character came forth. Earthy hop notes appeared later.
The flavor profile was crisp, dry and fairly hop forward. Crackery malts were noticeable up front. Earthy and herbal hop notes appeared next and crescendoed as the beer moved along the palate. Touch of lemon in the center. More lingering hoppy bitterness on the back end and the finish.
Outstanding mouthfeel. The beer was amazingly soft and fluffy on the palate. Medium bodied for the style. The liquid contained a super fine, zippy effervescence that gave the beer a terrific suppleness.
Notch’s anniversary releases are usually well received by lager enthusiasts, but the reviews on this one seem to indicate otherwise. Like the past iterations I have tried, XIII was solid but not particularly notable.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
