A traditional smoked lager modeled after the smoked beers of Bamberg using rauch (smoked) malt. Beechwood smoke is used to dry the barley during malting, resulting in a smoky aroma and a hint of smoke in the flavor. Single decocted, spunded, and lagered forever. The Black Lodge is the perfect balance between the malt and smoke with medium hop bitterness and a clean lager fermentation character.

A great example of the style. Has good smoke notes mixed into a creamy beer base. Very easy to drink with a soft fluffy head. Enough malt backbone to take well to hot poker treatment if you get it at a starkbierfest.

Crowler filled 1/27/24
I could just get stop in for a quick beer when I went to Notch the other night, I had to bring at least one thing home. How could I pass up a big crowler of Notch’s take on a Dunkel Rauchbier? There was no way. Let’s crack it open and find out what it’s all about
Pours a cloudy reddish brown with 4 fingers of rocky light tan head that slowly fades to a cap and leaves minimal lacing
The nose is super smoky but very smooth. I’m picking up on aromas of beechwood smoke, dark toast, brown sugar, raisin, herbal hops, black pepper, ham, light cacao nib, and spent coffee beans
Oh wow, this is way more subdued in taste but I dig it. On the front end if the sip I’m tasting dark bread, brown sugar, campfire smoke, red grape, black pepper, light herbal hops, and caramel. The swallow brings notes of beechwood smoke, cocoa powder, red grape, brown sugar, dark toast, herbal hops, and tobacco
A medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a slick beer. Finishes mostly dry and dries out further over time
I dig this one, but I’m surprised by how gentle the smoke is in taste
