Notch's 14th anniversary beer! Enhanced double decoction, open fermented, naturally carbonated and lagered forever. We employed an intensive double decoction mash to create a delicate yet deep malt character to balance the bitterenss. Open fermented, naturally carbonated and maturated in horizontal lagering tanks for months, this process is all but impossible for modern day US brewers.

Impressive appearance. A two-plus finger tall, super dense and rocky, bright white crown topped the crystal clear, brassy yellow body. The head quickly dropped to a thick, lasting collar. The collar eventually formed a wide, singular ring of drippy lacing. There was a bit of streaky, spotty lacing along the sides of the glass as well.
The aroma was outstanding. It was quite hoppy but smooth, fragrant and pleasantly sweet. Soft, grassy hop notes came through strong. There was a nice vibrant but subtle, fruity hop note as well, which reminded me of something one might find in a dry hopped beer. Lots of bright, sweet lemon character too. Italian lemon ice perhaps. Cereal grain notes were also apparent.
The flavor profile was also terrific and very similar to the aroma. Grassy hops again came through strong on the front end. Punchy but really soft and smooth. Lots of bright, sweet-tart lemon notes in the center. Nice cereal grain character as well. Some earthy hops and a touch of bitterness appeared on the back end and the finish. All in all, really smooth, well integrated and balanced.
Excellent soft, fluffy mouthfeel. Medium-full bodied for the style. The liquid contained a super fine and subtle effervescence that turned really frothy and smooth on the palate.
Notch anniversary beers have been hit or miss recently, but XIV was definitely a big hit with me. I could only hope that they would brew this one year round.
