L: Pours aclear amber red with a small white head and no lacing on the glass.

S: Starts off very Woody with a nice hint of caramel followed by a pretty strong bitterness. Light notes of nut and tobacco.

T: Lots of wood, caramel, hoppy bitterness, a touch of nut and tobacco. Boozy and strong.

F: Higher carb and larger body.

O: A decent but not super special barleywine.

Presenting the same foggy amber-brown and fairly fluid surface as the non-barrel aged version, except here there's no head to begin with, and it's only slightly darker.

While the intense hoppiness has certainly subsided here, the whiskey barrel supplants it with an impressively woody and drying characteristic that gives me really rustic, old sun-splintered juniper tree vibes. It's also a little herbal and caramelly, sometimes hinting at a sharpening pickled element I've occasionally detected in other straight whiskey barrel aged ales.

Muddy caramel color with a finger of grey-beige head, nice coffee-looking bubbly moss on top.

Not a whole lot of aroma besides stiff wood and light caramel. As the head recedes I'm getting some whiskey-woody cherry.

Flavor incorporates a large malt base with slight hints of caramel and very faint hints of cherry, but the oak is most prominent here, with some slight boozy rye whiskey behind that. Slightly smokey. A bit too boozy-oaky for me, it's almost all you taste besides the flavors faintly floating in the background.

Flavor starts off slightly watery with hints of creaminess, but then develops into a more medium to full body with sharp carbonation, heat, and whiskey drying on the finish.

Overall, not an overly impressive Whiskey Barrel Aged Barleywine, but it's still nice. I'd rather have this than many other beers.
