330ml bottle served in a wine glass. Dated "best by" 25.02.2027 -- which is definitely questionable because I basically bought it from a tourist trap in Brussels. But I figured it's a barleywine, so age oughtn't kill it...
Pours dark amber, small head, moderate carbonation. From arm's length and about half that, the edges seem clear but the body seems translucent at most. Smell is big English barleywine with some Belgian yeast notes. Tons of raisins and wood, some nuts, molasses with a slight vanilla twist. Fruit with just a blush of banana, spice with just a fluttering of cloves.
Taste is more mixture of barrel aged barleywine and quadrupel than I would have guessed from the smell. Amp up the dates and sweetness, ramp down the caramel, emphasize the banana and clove just a smidge. Boozy for sure.
Mouthfeel is thick, on the sticky side, pretty still. Overall...it's not bad. Nothing special. Wouldn't turn it down, wouldn't seek it out, wouldn't order it a second time if there was something else moderately interesting available.

Good beer with greatly hidden alcohol and too belgish nose.
But it is not barleywine.
