I had this on tap at Old Chicago, served in a pint glass.
Appearance- The beer is a very dark auburn-ruby body. It has a very small ring of white film. There is very slow carbonation rising to the top of the glass.
Smell- This pumpkin is really spicy. And talk about unleashed herbal notes. There is cardamom, nutmeg and cinnamon. There is absolutely no pumpkin meat smell. It is full on spice.
Taste- Whew! This is certainly a spiced ale, but a pumpkin? Not really, no. It's like drinking a watery apple cider with raw cinnamon sticks in the cup. It is really astringent, and only a little biscuit malt in the finish.
Mouth feel- It has a very light mouth feel. Again, it is watered down. And it is also a fizzy drink on top of that. It isn't really appealing, but you could do worse.
Overall- It smells all right, but this is not a pumpkin ale by any stretch of the imagination, and pumpkin shouldn't even be in the name. I would be willing to try this again when Great River sweetens it up, puts some pumpkin meat in here, makes the feel way more smooth and creamy, and tones down what are already overwhelming herbal notes.

Pours an amberish orange color without a head. Nose consists of pumpkin spices that are pretty weak. Taste starts off with a little bit of pumpkin flavor and transitions to a lot of toasted and cereal malts with a slight metallic flavor. Finishes with dry spices that aren't very discernible. This is a below average pumpkin ale - I can see what they were trying to do but this one fell a bit short for me. This didn't seem to flow well for me.

Hmm...
Guys, seriously--nothing would make me happier than to see Great River succeed. And I'm glad they're doing pretty well. They got fans and that's wonderful. But, Jesus, they're going to need to step things up in a big way if they want this move to be worthwhile.
This is a mediocre pumpkin ale. And I like Pumpkin ales a lot; I'm not one of those guys who refuses to give pumpkins high scores because they're not hoppy or whatever. This is just unbalanced.
There's a punch of bitter but not much sweetness, like straight nutmeg without any sugar or cream to balance it out. The spice dominates throughout. There's no variation whatsoever. It starts out nutmeggy, there's a little cinnamon, and then it ends nutmeggy.
