The appearance was a hazy brown color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. There was some light speckled lacing here and there in a messy sort of way. The smell had some light crisp roasty coffee to some light sweet chocolate. The taste was mainly sweet and tried to hold a respectable roastiness but somehow through this flavoring it seemed like it just wasn’t balanced enough. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was somewhat subdued and gave off a clear crisp sweetness rolling over my tongue. Overall, kinda weird as a stout, maybe again if offered.

16 fl oz. can, no canned on date or freshness information. A new one to me, my first beer from Great River Brewery, acquired a single can of this stuff as part of a mixed six pack at the local Binny's. "Stout with coffee added", brewed using 'an 18 hour cold brew extraction method' per the can.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.

A - Pours an attractive brown-black body, not opaque, with notes of brown showing near the surface. Over a finger of frothy khaki-tan head that leaves big fluffy scattered lacing on the way down. Looks good for what it is.

S - Aroma doesn't quite hit it: lots of earthy, burnt, roasty, twiggy malt presence. An earthy musty yeast profile. Notes of dark roast & char, but not indicative of coffee bean roast or freshly grinded coffee in any way really. There is even a slight tinge of fruity hop presence on the back end, i do believe. Was expecting a coffee bomb.

T - Taste is the same: lots of burnt malt, roast, & char, but not indicative of coffee beans or freshly grinded creamy coffee in any way. No overt notes of milk chocolate, cream, vanilla, or smooth creamy coffee. Just straight-up dark roasty charred malt, with again a slight piney / bitter American hop note on the end.

M - Feel is smooth, creamy, dark, bitter, roasty. Medium-bodied, perhaps even slightly watery at times. Feels a lot more roasty and bitter than 36 IBU but what do i know.

Overall, this beer has high ratings and a nice premise so i had high hopes for it; was expecting greatness in coffee beer form somewhere along the lines of Surly Coffee Bender, but this one missed the mark for me. Would be interested in trying more from this brewery.

Strong coffee aroma and flavor with a bit of roasted malt. Not much other than that, not much of a coffee fan but can appreciate this.

Very good. A refreshing stout. One of the few I could find myself sipping on a hot day. Love redband coffee and this is a great addition to it. Pleasant brew from IA.
