being called just irish stout at the bar where i had it, im sure its the same thing. nice to see something new from boneyard, just in time for st pattys day, makes good sense this time of year, a style often overlooked by american brewers but one i have a soft spot for, great to see this on nitro too. this is solid, impressively robust which is no surprise from these guys, but also a little strange to me, deviant even, as much as a lot of it is still true to style. the beer is coal black, eggshell luster, and has a short but lasting creamy white nitro head less than an inch tall. it smells like coffee thats been on the warming plate a little too long, not quite burnt or smoked, but aggressive and concentrated and intense. still some old world bready irish yeast behind it for some depth, and it seems seasonally appropriate. i sometimes say that beer taste like cigarette, like unlit ones fresh from a new pack, that sweet tobacco thing, but this one like actually tastes like taking a drag, more burnt than it smells, not acrid or gross, but deeply charred and permeating the tongue. some serious bitterness to this too, very little else in the mash to balance it out, and it hits a little too deep for the kind of drinkability i generally want in this style. that said, the texture remains light, and while the nitro creaminess doesnt really stay with it through the whole pint, it thins out a bit, it does cover the bases for the style, is well made, and stands out from the crowd at the same time. its just a little past reasonable on the roast, makes it a little monotone, but i get what they were doing and on the whole i like how dry this finishes. if you like the aftertaste of cigarettes, this may hit home. i appreciated it without loving it...
