super cool blend here that they are calling a black barleywine, bourbon barrel imperial stout and rye barrel barleywine blended together, and its wonderful stuff, super roasty and bold on the oak, not as sweet and maybe rich as some of these can be, lots of stout character retained, but a little more to it on the malt side with the barleywine in there, love the rye influence and the proportions on this, boneyard kills it with these strong ales, but its such an underappreciated part of what they do. near black, not quite as viscous as anticipated at this abv and all, but big anyway, limited head and head retention, mocha colored loose bubbles. the nose on this is stout first to me, roasty with a coffee note and lots of oak, rye whiskey intensity, pretty deep, but also some grain depth as the barleywine makes its impact, molasses and leather and tobacco and raisin, but they dont make this sweet to me, vanilla from the bourbon, maple, even some hops in the mix surprisingly, quickening bitterness late. the bourbon and the rye together are cool, the oak presence and char are robust, and the roast overall is pretty intense. licorice and cola, dark chocolate, a little alcohol sting at the end too, drier than most things called barleywine, i think this blend is pretty spot on, the contribution of both base beers is obvious and they are real compatible. outstanding cold weather brew here, cozy without being sugary, sturdy and awesome.
