date of tasting: 4/6/2013
place of tasting: Barley Vine - Bristol, CT
beer: X-Limited Edition (batch: 02) ESB
brewery: Cavalry
brewery location: Oxford, CT
type: Ale
style: Extra Special Bitter
abv: 6%
ibu:
glass: mug w/appearance test in tasting glass
temperature of beer: 45F
Appearance: color reminds me of old copper pipes, no head to speak of, pours whispy and it’s gone. LIttle to no carbonation present.
Smell: fruit roll-up, piney hops-almost arugula like.
Taste: malty, slightly bready, whole wheat toast, pine nut with a little pine cone floral hoppiness. It has a bit of what I would imagine green apple cider would taste like. A bit of english breakfast tea in the finish.
Mouthfeel: slightly heavier than light body yet not quite medium bodied, rich carbonation and a bit chewy
Overall Impression: a good solid ESB, it’s well balanced, I like that Cavalry stepped out of their comfort zone a bit with the higher ABV and IBU’s than they normally do.
Food Pairings: braised pork belly, cuban sandwich, fried pickles, lays potato chips and sour cream chive dipping sauce
