A compact one finger tan head sits atop a very dark red body. It's chill hazed but nonetheless looks inviting.
The smell is pretty basic. It's bready and gives off a baker's yeast scent.
More bread and a burnt popcorn taste make the body of this beer slightly acidic tasting. There is a notable use of citrusy hops that mix with the burnt flavor to produce a confusing finish. The aftertaste is grainy with some hops bitterness lingering. The mouthfeel is medium and not bad considering the low level of suspended carbonation.
I was looking to try another local brew, hoping that someone nearby makes something decent. I haven't had the other two that Zimella produces, but if this is any indication, they will be just as confusing.
It unfortunately reminds me of mediocre homebrew, possibly a first run at doing an all-grain mash. Where I detract points for straying from a well defined style, I add them for effort. You have to support your local breweries, and with enough constructive criticism, this beer might become a staple. It's nowhere near that at the moment, but not worth writing off entirely.
