Chocolate Porter

Big odd swing-top bottle into a Central Waters shaker pint glass.

Seal brown liquid - very dark but clear with a light tan finger. Creamy/pasty lacing; superior head retention.

Brown butter (a touch of diacetyl I think), molasses, caramel, raw grain, and light roast coffee in the nose.

Roast grain, rye dough, milk chocolate, and toasted specialty malt on the palate. An unusual fruitiness emerges over time. Hops are difficult to pick out at all. Finishes medium-dry with loam and a touch of molasses and caramel.

Medium-light-bodied, creamy yet crisp.

An unusual low-key local - not quite what I was expecting, but worth a try.

 

 

 

Appearance: Straight pour into a pint glass. The color is an opaque, jet black. The head looked pretty thin and pathetic during the pour, but afterward one finger’s worth of thick, tan foam developed; it dissipated quickly to leave a proper, porter-like ring around the edge and spiral galaxy of lacing in the center.

Smell: I could smell a lot of dark, roasted chocolate and coffee during the pour, which is exactly what is smells like in the glass. Though I do not think it is supposed to be an oatmeal stout, it has an oat smoothness.

Taste: Though the body is very thin and watery, it is packed with roasted flavor. There is a massive roasted coffee and dark chocolate presence, tickling my dark malts preference. Each sip leaves a lasting and welcome bitterness in the mouth.

Drinkability: The only thing this porter lacks is a lot more body. Much like the amber ale I tried from this brewery, I suspect there are quality control or packing issues that contribute to the beer’s lackluster taste. However, I would love to try this again once those issues have been taken care of; I think it could be a sinister porter.

Poured from giant 750ml + Swing top bottle into Globe glass.

A. Poured 2 finger tan head. Thick lacing and good retention. Color is black. Appearance is starting things off good for this beer made 16 miles away.

S. Smell is roasted malt. Light milk chocolate smell, with a bit of bitter dark chocolate aroma. Overall not a bad smell at all, just not very strong smelling.

T. Taste has some nice porter flavors. Roasted malt. Not too bitter. Some faint chocolate flavors come out toward the end. This isnt a bad porter at all, but not very chocolatey.

M. Medium/light bodied. Medium carbonation. Slight lingering sweetness. Could use some more body.

D. Drinkable for sure. Pretty sessionable porter if you ask me. Not to sure on the name Chocolate Porter. I was expecting more chocolate flavor than this delivered. Not necessarily a bad thing, since some beers are overpowering on the chocolate. Pretty decent beer from an up and coming brewery.

Picked this up at HyVee in Waverly, right across the road from the brewery. It comes in a sweet 1 L or more swingtop bottle.

The pour is rich black with a creamy brown head plunging deep into the beer. The head could have been denser, but pretty good all together.

Chocolate and roasted grain dominated the smell. No hops, just a wonderfully distinct, rich smell that was dry and had all sorts of aspects, but was definitely not stout-like as some heavy porters tend to be.

The taste follows the smell, again nice and dry with strong chocolate and roasted notes.

The mouthfeel left a little to be desired. Perhaps too dry, it felt thin.
