A modern brown ale with a good balance of hops and malt. A great seasonal bridge between our pale ales and porters.

Copenhagen 9/1 2022. 33 cl bottle from Mikkeller & Friends Bottle Shop. Rough brown paper label with just the name of the beer and brewery.

Pours unclear dark maroon with a red hue and a big off-white head. Stable. Settles as 2 cm thick layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Substantial lacing.

Aroma is medium intense with a toasted and sweet scent with a sugary touch. Toasted dark malts, caramel and toffee. Brown sugar and hazelnut.

Light carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, soft, smooth, creamy, almost flat texture.

Flavor is medium intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a more moderate bitterness. Aftertaste is sweetish with a bitter undertone. Lingers for a while.

Smooth and silky and a bit to the sweet side.

De 32gp. En copa Teku. Estudiando. Correcta pero tampoco para tirar cohetes, con un perfil Brown que no llega a decir mucho, la verdad, y está algo sobrecarbonatada. De Kernel uno espera más, un plus que aquí no hay

From a 330ml bottle.
L: Dark red/brown. No visible carbonation and a thin smear of head.
S: Full-on chocolate.
T: Lovely, soft chocolate with a little herbal astringency and a sweet, alcoholic finish.
F: Light, kind of thin, but not watery. Hint of carbonation and refreshingly dry.
O: Yep. Liked this. Modern brown ale. Drank it cold and the chocolate still shone through. Mouthfeel worked really well given it has light body and low carbonation.

A word of caution: Kernel regularly change the recipe for their brown ale. I’m trying this beer again in July 2022 (5 years after my original review!) and it’s a radically different version. Hopped with Centennial and 5.3% ABV. Looks fantastic - masses of khaki lacing. No chocolate flavour but full-on pine. Still very good but a completely different beer.

Appearance - Deep dark dirty brown colour bordering on black. The head is pretty disappointing though only raising a light lace.

Smell - Nutty woody aroma. with slightly sweet biscuit style malts very light hop presence but it is in there none the less. Slight chocolate aroma at the very end.

Taste - The taste of this one is rather like a hazel nut cake. I think this one is much better then Rogue Hazelnut ale which felt clinical and forced the taste here is subtle and sweet. Plenty of dark malty character and again some chocolate elements coming through.

Mouth feel - Think and buttery/oily. This one is very smooth and although oily is not always a good thing this one pulls it off just about.

Overall - A pretty good beer when all is said and done. I enjoyed it and will not turn my nose up at it should I come across it again but equally I will not necessarily be hunting for it again, but if it comes up at the right price I'll grab a few.

330ml bottle, bottle-conditioned. Pours dark brown, almost opaque. Aroma herbal hop. Mouthfeel: quite syrupy. Taste: almost milky, dark brown malts. Overall: Competent brown ale. Good choice of hop. Lighter (in body) than a stout.

Cola dark brown body with spotty just off white tiny bulled head

Aroma of just opened pipe tobacco

Malty and chicory like a dry roast for nuts only slightly sweet slight sour tang on after taste not too dissimilar from root beer, no real sweetness either

Decent enough carbonation & mouthfeel.

Is this a "grown up" version of a Broon?

slightly different
