this beer is awesome, my first from these guys other than the collaboration they did with jester king. i am going to visit their brewery when i am over there later this month. this porter is awesome, at under 8% abv i dont know that i would call it a double porter, but i guess by english standards, and there is so much body on this it wouldnt surprise me if they actually doubled the grain bill of some lesser porter for it. shiny black and very dense in the glass, with a head as tall as the liquid part, no matter how fast or slow i pour. the head lasts the whole drink, peaky and pretty light chocolate brown, really sexy beer. the aroma here is like chocolate covered hops, the pure high cocoa dark chocolate that only adults like though, its earthy and bitter, all from the grain, really neat complexion here. i didnt expect hops like galaxy and citra, known for their distinct fruitiness, to be so compatible with the robust porter, but it really does work. no lemon or melon notes here for me, the hops assume a more traditional hop role here, some pine to them, lots of oils, and some bitterness to finish, just slight suggestions of their more common dry hoppy identities, but i like them restrained and incorporated in this way. got to be some oats in here too, its really full feeling, creamy and rich, dry and earthy. wonderful texture, so smooth, well enough carbonated, and big feeling but dry, just a little alcohol coming through at the end. a really delicious introduction to this brewery, i am so stoked to drink some more of their beers. this is one of the better hoppy porters i have ever had, reminds me of an awesome mikkeller beer in a similar style, bravo!
