A:
Pours a thick impenetrable black. With a proud, brown, styrofoam head that never drops below an inch. Beautiful!. Candlewax lacing. (5)
S:
Light citrus and pine brightness on top of chocolate, roast chestnuts, coffee grounds and very faint molasses. (4.25)
T:
Neither fresh and hoppy nor sticky and sweet. A wave of milk chocolate and espresso is soon joined with an almost tart cirusy hop character. (4.25)
M:
Rich and creamy with light, soft carbonation. There is a rising roast astringency that creeps up in the finish. (4.25)
O:
This is a very, very nice black IPA.
It is shockingly attractive in the glass. It really couldn't look better. The nose and flavor are both interesting and just about what you'd expect them to be. Mocha dusted pine syrup with a twist and some lime zest. Both the malt and hop profiles are really nice on their own. Together they are both balanced and extreme. At first it is a little too much but as it warms up (served at 50) and after your palate adjust it is a nice roasty chocolatey stout with a bright citrus oil-laden west coast hop bill. This astringent, roasty bite, which eventually mellows (or maybe you just get used to it), made me shave a little off the taste and mouthfeel, but it definitely melds in with the rest enough to end up very nice and deserving of a higher overall score. I liked this one a lot! Admittedly, I am way more of a fan of black IPAs than a lot of people seem to be. This one made me want to try IPAs from these guys, but it REALLY made me want to try their stouts and porters. Grab a bottle if you come across it! (4.5)
