A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2013 (bottled Jan 2013). Acquired a little while back from Trembling Madness in York. The rear of the label says Simcoe + Motueka, Topaz and Centennial; I don't know why the name is 'Simcoe +' as Kernel usually name all the hops on the front. I can only assume that Simcoe is the dominant variety in this brew.
Poured into a straight pint glass. B. ottle conditioned. A hazy golden-amber hue with fine sediment and light carbonation. Produces a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a frothy surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of fruity hops with hints of white grape, melon, citrus and mild pine. Underpinned by sweet malt, faint caramel and earthy yeast. Nice.
Tastes of fruity aromatic hops with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of white grape, melon, grapefruit, citrus, faint pine, earthy yeast, mild caramel and stewed hops. Highly attenuated, with a powerful bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with good body. Carbonation levels could be improved. Rather astringent, with an aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops and earthy yeast.
Another solid offering from the Kernel. Great hoppy aroma and flavour, while the bitterness packs a punch. Could do with being a tad more carbonated, but this is fairly trivial. Big flavour and character. Well worth sampling if you have the chance.
