Victoria? Calgary? Whistler? Let's not fight over who invented it, but instead, let's bask in the glory of it's existence... The Shaft is the ultimate reward for all the heroes of our industry. Late nights and long shifts will soon be forgotten.
Just launched: The Shaft Russian Imperial Espresso Stout made with freshly pulled @oughtredcoffee espresso, cocoa nibs, hazelnut extract and Mexican vanilla. 10.5% ABV. It's tastes exactly like a shaft. But beer. We just put bottles out in the pub...

Appearance: Poured with only a half finger of head that did not lace or retain, although I will give some leeway as I did have this bottle in my fridge for a while. The body is impenatrable and is as black as night.
Smell: Initially, all am I picking up is Vanilla and maybe a few hints of coffee and warming doesn't really help it come out. It's not bad, but it's just not potent enough.
Taste: Starts with a bit of chocolate but predominantly vanilla, but then it really makes it clear that this is a milk stout as that sweet vanilla kicks into a sweetness I'd expect from ice cream, there you may find the barest notes of bitter coffee that fights to just barely escape at the end of the beer.
Mouthfeel: The carbonation does add creaminess to the beer, but it's really accentuating the incredibly high sweetness that cloys into an aftertaste. Think of that vanilla icecream that has those thin line/streaks of flavouring. It's like that, only a cafe mocha is the lines and it's not near potent enough to really push back the vanilla. I'll give it this, there is no way you would pick up on this being a 10.5% offering. This beer seems to put forth what it's trying to accomplish a bit too early and leaving the end a bit absent.
Drinkability: It's just too sweet to be refreshing or an easy drinker. I usually expect stouts to be sippers because of the burnt malt bittness, this one it's because it's like sippping liquid cake. The body is thick and heavy, but is only about two steps from Porter territory for me.
Final Thoughts: This is a desert beer, that is the only time you could drink this. I coudl see drinking this with strawberries, but really...this beer is like you came up with a cold version of a half french vanilla cappuccino, and half a cafe mocha from Tim Horton's. It's not as bad as it's sounds, but it's diabetes in a cup. The sweetness here needs to be brought down.

Moon Under Water Brewpub 'The Shaft' Russian Imperial Stout @ 10.5% , served from a 650 ml bottle , 2019 , 2020 & 2022 vintage's
A-pour is cola brown from the bottle to near black in the glass with a medium size tan head leaving a fine spotty lace along the tulip
S-fresh pulled espresso , hints of Mexican vanilla
T-creamy smooth start , almost sweet , a true sipping beer with a bitter coffee/espresso swallow to finish
MF-ok carbonation , full bodied
Ov-good beer , gets better with time in the cellar , one of the better local Russian Imperial Stout
