Picked up seven singles and a 6-pack of Pizza Port, all beers I had never tried, on a recent trip to Trader Joe’s. Not a Mike Hess fan (the beer, not the man), but lately have been enjoying this Solis series. Gave the #64 a 3.92 in March 2017 and the #76 a 3.70 in October 2017. Looked at the back of the can of this one on a recent trip to Trader Joe’s and it looked interesting and pretty complex. The website read, “Batch 79: A collaboration with Team MHB Sales, is 2-row and white wheat, plus a 5 hop blend of Eureka, Comet, Citra, Simcoe and Cascade hops, with all 5 hops in throughout, including the whirlpool addition.” Big fan of Simcoe and Citra, knew Cascade well, pretty familiar with Comet and vaguely familiar with Eureka. Was looking forward to it once again.
Poured a light amber clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of frothy white head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Excellent spotty lacing. Excellent retention. (Sight - 4.25)
Smelled tangerine, mandarin orange, spicy Simcoe, Amarillo (if I didn’t know better), sweet Citra, pine, toffee, orange blossom, peach, caramel, white grapefruit and grass. Even sweeter whiffs from the can. (Smell - 3.75)
Taste was a bit all over the place. In order got mandarin orange, toffee, spicy Simcoe, woody pine, dish soap, Cascade, peach, caramel candy, bitter tangerine rind, sweet Citra, floral and orange blossom. Was getting all that 7.5 pct. ABV. (Taste - 4.00)
Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Abrupt, bitter finish. (Feel - 3.75)
Not usually a big fan of a lot of hops, but this one was pretty good. Kept growing on me as it went down. Was back and forth on a few of the categories, but happy with the overall grading. (Overall - 3.75)
