Tasted at the brewpub over 25 minutes.
Poured a sun-brightened copper with a very thin head that fell fast into just a rim on the glass without lacing. It's not much to look at, really.
Some bitter hops in the nose, but more malty and just a hint of walnut. More strength in the aroma would be welcome.
It has a thin, smooth front. Not much depth in the center of the flavor profile. But there's an interesting rhubarb-bitter end and a great roasted malt aftertaste.
In the mouth, it's rather watery. Carbonation is low, too, making it rather uninteresting on the tongue. Very drinkable, of course, but not much depth.
Although it's not stellar, I'm prompted to elevate my overall rating because something makes me want to reach for more. Some components need work, but the brewers have found a taste that's worth indulging...and repeating.

From their website:
- Our ESB is a rich, full-bodied English-style bitter, brewed with carefully selected malts and hops, giving a smooth, copper coloured beer, slightly dry and moderately hopped. The name can be misleading, as it is generally not particularly bitter. Colour – 11° SRM Bitterness – 49 IBU Alcohol - 5.5 %.
Poured with absolutely no head. I could not create a head with vigorous stirring of the liquid (that produced very large bubbles that faded quickly). No lace naturally. Reasonably clear. Golden copper color.
Good bitterness to the nose but it isn't like an IPA, pretty much to the style. Some malty "roundness" to aroma as well.
The flavor is very close to what I'd expect in Britain, although it doesn't have the richness I would expect. Good bitterness but not overwhelming. Under carbonated but it doesn't make up for the thinness.
In short, a mixed bag.
